How To Build A House, Part 1
I NEVER show work earlier than about 80% done. EVER. Why? Because, almost invariably, people are disappointed. "What the heck is that lump of crap?" is the general reaction. It just doesn't look like the subject for most of it's development. It's hard to see the potential until that magic moment when it suddenly coalesces into a recognizable head.
But folks have been wanting to see the process, so, this is a one time thing.
And if I sound goofy, forgive me. It's the "good" cough syrup talking!
First, you start with a rather unpromising looking block of Super Sculpey Firm approx. 1.5" x 2" x 3"..... something like that. Doesn't look like much, but he's in there already, we just need to let him out.
So, we quickly hack off a bunch until it resembles something vaguely human, about 1.66" from chin to top of skull for a 1:6 scale figure, 12" tall with a 7.5 head proportioned body.
I scale a photo of the subject, in this case Hugh Laurie, to the proper size so I can take measurements of his features. Using these I start to mess about with the head, getting cheeks in place, marking out eye position, etc. Ignore the cat, he was trying to help.
More to come shortly after I take a nap.
