How To Build A House, Part 1

I NEVER show work earlier than about 80% done. EVER. Why? Because, almost invariably, people are disappointed. "What the heck is that lump of crap?" is the general reaction. It just doesn't look like the subject for most of it's development. It's hard to see the potential until that magic moment when it suddenly coalesces into a recognizable head.

But folks have been wanting to see the process, so, this is a one time thing.

And if I sound goofy, forgive me. It's the "good" cough syrup talking! :sick

First, you start with a rather unpromising looking block of Super Sculpey Firm approx. 1.5" x 2" x 3"..... something like that. Doesn't look like much, but he's in there already, we just need to let him out.

So, we quickly hack off a bunch until it resembles something vaguely human, about 1.66" from chin to top of skull for a 1:6 scale figure, 12" tall with a 7.5 head proportioned body.

I scale a photo of the subject, in this case Hugh Laurie, to the proper size so I can take measurements of his features. Using these I start to mess about with the head, getting cheeks in place, marking out eye position, etc. Ignore the cat, he was trying to help.

More to come shortly after I take a nap.

Cant wait to see more Chris!!! So very cool of you to give us a glimps of your process for House :rock :rock :rock

Fantastic idea Chris! Be sure to post this in your own thread when you are done with these. I'm sure many others will enjoy the creative process as well.

I am amazed how you can even get from that grey block to Heath Ledger or Jack Torrence or House. Impressive to say the least.

Get feeling better Chris.

Where was I? Oh, yeah.

A Little more development. Measure and mark, measure and mark.

Aha! A nose....

hlwip5.jpg

Peepers.... getting creepy at this point

I just keep referring to photos, around 40 in all, making measurements, learning his face, understanding it and transferring that to the clay.

Still looks like crap.

More to come...

Same deal, just keep refining, looking for those little things that make Hugh Laurie Hugh Laurie.

Thank you! I appreciate the compliment. I will repost, plus I thought I'd send folks over here...

Is the room spinning or is that just me. Oy.

Wow! I can already start to see Hugh in that last pic! This process is facinating! I can't believe just how "little by little" you have to work on it. Just the basic facial structures and then slowly the final face starts to emerge! Wow! :google

Wow chris!! That's a very cool evolution. Makes me appreciate what you sculptors do even more

Love the WIP pics. Keep them up. I really am seeing Hugh Laurie coming out of the sculpt.

I think we'll be fine as long as Howes' House head is bigger than Ada's. It's the size of a pea, super super small.

Scaling from the photograph, it appears that Ada's head is only about 1.45 to 1.5 inches from chin to top of skull which is way small for a 1/6 figure. That would make him about 8 heads tall.... a proportion I have always found ridiculous.

I base my heads on a 7.5 head tall body. Looks much more natural. That results in a head that measures 1.6 inches from chin to top of skull. This varies a bit based on the individual, of course, but it gives me a good initial size.

BTW, thank you for using the proper possessive form of my name (Howes'). I hate when people add the extra "s"! :D It's the little things in life....

Damn Chris...that looks AMAZING! I might have to jump in on this one too. Your work is truly art!:bow
