HT (and other companies) seem to pass on obvious licenses and nab kinda WTF licenses instead. Recent example: Platoon. I'm sure people will love the figures. But still. HT is releasing Platoon figures and still, NO ONE is officially releasing like Blade Runner figures or Road Warrior figures, etc.

Its not just a WTF choice, some of those licenses are pains in the asses to get. Sideshow has been actively working on getting the Blade Runner license for years. For the past three years at least every chat that comes up, someone always asks the Blade Runner question to the point where just recently a simple "don't ask" was given. Tons of red tape around Blade Runner, Road Warrior, Back to the Future, the list just keeps going. Hell, the 60s Batman TV show is one that multiple companies even DCD has been trying to do but the rights are extrememly ____ed up. The good thing is that once one company cracks it, all of a sudden the flood gates open. Jerry from Pop Culture Shock just did an interview where he said he was chasing Thundercats for 10 years. Then suddenly another company cracked it and he called up to get his stuff in line.

As for the Michael Jackson line, its obvious that HT is going to milk the resurgance of MJ interest to the point of no return. I remember before he died rumors of an Elvis figure floating around then all of sudden MJ figure 2 and now 3. I'm sure you'll get a couple more minimum before they move anywhere else.

Then there's the problem of what will actually sell. And sell worldwide. MJ does. The people you listed? Not so sure. A young OR old BB King 1/6 figure might sell here in the states but like in HK/Asia? Doubt it. Could be wrong.. :dunno

Exactly, well said. Thats the principle I think alot of people forget about when making out their "want" list. You really have to stop & think about what would sell & which licences would benefit HT the most when choosing the figures they wish to make. Sure, you may want that said likeness but how well would it sit with the global fandom? Out of the list he gave I honestly dont see a majority of those guys even making it to the drawing board for production plans. Lennon & Morrison are probably the only two that would be well received by the general public.

I personally want to see Prince. But Prince is very :cuckoo: when it comes to likeness/copyright business, so I'm sure it would be a major hassle to get him on board...

I'm game as long as the bigger focus on musicians doesn't affect golden licenses like Blade Trinity or Ghost Rider.

I'm trying to think of a musician who's had the global appeal of MJ. Elvis maybe? Would I buy it? Probably not (maybe a jailhouse rock figure...maybe). Elvis is more for a generation ahead of mine and so there's no real appeal here.

John Lennon or Paul McCartney? I'd probably get a John Lennon over a Paul but that's just me. Prince? Naw...I was more into MJ than Prince back in the 80s.

For me, MJ's always had this movie star/icon/cool like quality to him. Sort of like Bruce Lee.

Now if they had a Morrissey figure....hmmm.... ;)

None of them are as relative as Mj, nor as popular as him, so Hot Toys will pass, but appreciate the suggestion!

I think Elvis is really the only other musician with as much (or more) global pull than MJ.

Medicom has made quite a few musicians, but they don't seem to sell well. I'd still like to get their Sid Vicious figure at some point; its a crap figure... but still funny to see punk rock made into an expensive 1/6 figure :lol

This has been discussed before (probably multiple times), but I think folks are right in that, 1) it has to be something that will sell in both Asia and the U.S./UK/Europe. 2) it has to be an "iconic" artist. 3) it is best if the character looks interesting.

I think 3 is an important point, and generally is the case with MJ. Thriller had the cool zombie look and bright red outfit that stands out on the shelf. Bad has the complex jacket with the zippers. Even later MJ has all the freakish plastic surgery that would make him noticeable on the shelf.

As Ben says, I think the Misfits would be a great choice. An iconic cult band that apparently has a following in Japan (probably because they were so theatrical). Ozzy would be another good choice, because he has lots of neat looks, and would sell anywhere. Elvis is an obvious choice, and his likeness has been used so frequently in so many settings, that I can't imagine it is that difficult to acquire. Then there is KISS, which Medicom recently did, as well as Queen, David Bowie, Madonna, and scores of others that could fit this bill. Dark horse would be Parliament Funkadelic, and particularly, Bootsy and George Clinton.

So, I agree that HT should expand to other musicians, and I think it could be a good business move that could make lots of collectors happy.

Would love to see Hot Toys take on either Queen with Freddie,
Or Joe Elliott with the rest of the lads from Def-Leppard (And before they start let's keep the One armed drummer jokes in there holsters eh? :lecture)

Kindest regards ;)

I love MJ's music, but if they're gonna call it a MUSIC line, they need to stop doin just MJ for a while after the smooth criminal, it's already become more of a Michael Jackson Line
