I will just give my opinion after all it is what this board is for. I do agree that customizing is an art. I love coming to the boards and seeing what has been done to the figures. Actually it is what keeps me coming back. The artists on the other hand need to understand that everyone does not have the money to make their figures look like the prototype. I feel that if Sideshow presents a prototype at preorder fine. On the other hand before you charge my master card show me the end result. PERIOD. Anakin broke more than Padmes heart when he was shipped to my front door. You say just return him. Thats not the answer. Feel free to complain and gripe. Maybe they will listen. I know I cannot repaint nor am I willing to pay someone to. Especially after I paid $65 or whatever it was. So you see I see both sides. I love seeing repaints and different costuming. However I don't see the same quality of the Sideshow figures as I do in their prototypes. Now the only question left to be answered is would I be willing to pay more money to have a figure that looks like the prototype? Well to me that is a dumb question. After all I gave them my credit card info after taking a look at the prototype. I should not expect a different figure. But I digress, Aragorn still looks like he is taking a painful crap and not fighting Orcs. Anyways you guys are all great and keep up the good work!

It has never been my intention to present work that "looks just like the prototype." I do not use the prototype for reference. I use screen caps and images of the actual person. My goal has always been to make something as realistic as possible. I ignore the prototype completely.

As to the difference between proto and production- I agree that people should get exactly what they pay for. Sideshow presents a level of quality in their pre-orders that they have often not been able to match in production. Does that make the production figures bad? For the most part, no. Strider, in my opinion, is an excellent figure, well beyond what has been seen up till now. The level of detail and sheer number of parts and design that wnet into his creation is staggering. I am in awe that he was made at that level at all. Is he less than the proto? Yes. Yes he is. Still a great figure. But less than we thought he would be.

Not everyone can repaint or pay to have repainting done. Many have said they shouldn't have to. I agree. This is a hobby. No one HAS TO do anything.

In the end, I'm not exactly sure what this thread is meant to be about. I see 1) Aragorn bashing.
2) Backhanded kudos to customizers and those willing to use them.
3) Yet another treatise on the proto v. prod debate.

What is to be discussed here? I'd love to argue, but I'm not sure of your topic...

Definately wasn't meant to start an argument. Your pics's are what got me hooked to the site. I forget what thread it was but a customizer was basically saying that we should just accept sideshows paint jobs and just repaint them or have the repainted. I was just putting out the obvious that not everyone can repaint or is willing to. Guess I kinda want better end results from Sideshow for my money. Will I still buy them? Hellz yah I will. Hopefully with the announcement of Hot Toys new line they will try to get more competitive. I guess that's what I was trying to say.

Hot Toys isn't really a competitor to SSC. Compare the price - IMHO SSC brings in a product AT LEAST as good as HT - but for a significantly lower price. And I have to say that despite the complaints you hear the headsculpts and paint are in general superior to HT. Different from the Prototype yes but that prototype is essentially a custom figure.

Thought I would add my take on the post.

The way I look at it,the 12inch figures I buy (Sideshow Monsters/Horror) all need a touch up,I`m not knocking them at all but I look on them as MODELS,I have been buying and making models fo 30 plus years and to add a more realistic look to the piece is my joy!And find the figures more detailed than the thousands of plastic or resin kits I have made over the past three decades :)monkey4 ).

I dont buy to keep in Boxes (Anymore),but to enjoy the piece in all it`s glory.

and most are cheap enough (Compared to some Model Kits).

Customising is the way of the Dedicated Model maker.(Mikey)

Models to me,For better or worse a few pics below on my latest lot!

What exactly do you understand about customizing butt!?!?!?

I understand why someone would want to customise. Had you read my above comments however you would know what I am talking about. So I won't repeat myself. Thanks!

There is an extra "t" I am pretty sure that is what was being referred to. :wave

My whole view on this would be similiar to Dassy's..... I started doing this just because I wanted a more film accurate display and wanted to try my hand. Mikey was a big encouragement because of his caliber of work, something to give me hope when I picked up my brushes for the first time....

I think that SSC puts out some outstanding stuff, great figures that for the price... should have been much much worse off. Yeah, the factory apps have been horrible in some cases... and I know the sadness that a non-custom painter must feel when he/she recieves said item. But I also know that production paint will never ever match the prototype.... EVER.

I started taking orders for painting simply because I wanted to help my buddies out, so that everyone could have a decent figure with a paint job they were happy with. Most of the time the money just goes into new brushes and paint, I don't see much profit...

I know not everyone can pay $20 plus shipping for every figure they were ever let down with to have it repainted... it sucks but what can you do?

I just offer my services to those who CAN do it, those who are willing to do it. Should they have to?? No... but they can if they wish. At least it gives people an option. :D

HILARIOUS!

I for one respect the customizers here, DarkArtist, Mikey, and Les. They are the three that I know of. They offer us other collectors a great service. I know that if I needed something repainted or even touched up that I wouldn't hesitate contacting anyone of them. Sideshow puts out amazing products. But, sometimes there are some issues with them. But, issues can arise with anything.

Well, the thing is, Sideshow is in no way misrepresenting their figures between the prototype and the production figure. The prototype is just a representation of the figure to try to give you an idea of what you are buying, they aren't telling you that's what you are getting, they just use it to show you something similar to what you will be receiving. That's why it's called a prototype, from the dictionary: a standard or typical example, compared to a definition of production: regularly manufactured; not custom-made, specially produced, or experimental: a production model

So, if the figure isn't what you want, then it really is your choice of whether or not to keep it, or have it modified to the way you want. But you can't blame Sideshow for something that you don't like.
