Ikea Granas Coffee Table become awesome Display Case

I just sprayed down the Granas coffee table frame and alum trims in the carbon mist color. Letting it dry for 24 hrs. Then I will tape down the trims to the bottom board and legs.

My LED light strip ribbon came in today and its awesome! I ordered the 5050 150 led ribbon setup.

Test fit on the painted trim. That paint doesn't want to stick the aluminum.
I'm also going to have to switch out the bolts to flatheads to make them flush fit.

You need to prime the aluminum first. You can even use an all-in-one Rustoleum primer/paint like I did:

I been doing the granas coffee table mod in my garage. Just one side of garage is all the space you need.

I used my Dremel with diamond cutter blade ($17) to cut the slots into leg and aluminum trims. For the home depot shelves, I cut them with a Stanley 15" sharp tooth saw.

Also I bought spray paint for the Granas case and shelf boards.

May i ask the item or code number you used for the shelving(base) of your table?

I painted it dark walnut spray paint. Looks pretty good even with one coat.

not available at any stores around me per website... you have the wheels on the painted surface, any chemical reaction with the rubber?

I'm not yet done with the Granas display yet. Still gotta get the acrylic glass side panels cut at Lowes and tape it on.

I should get 4 square shape arcylic pieces to put underneath the tires so it doesnt touch the painted shelf boards.

Bbts should be shipping the Batmobile soon. They charged my card just now.

It always makes me feel good coming in this thread and seeing the works of art everyone are making! Good stuff fellas!

Here's a little update to where my Granas is at right now. Still some more things I want to be adding namely a giant wookie named Chewbacca! But its left to the fate of the 1/6 gods! Hope you dig my latest! Cheers GRANAS brotherhood!

Hey guys. I have been going true this thread but its pretty long I had one question I hope some one can help me with. How are the acrylic pieces on the side attached? Is like the silver trim some are using but is that trim attached to the table and then how is the acrylic then attached to that.

I will be using Scotch clear double sided tape to attach the acrylic glass to the aluminum trims and table frame. You can get a 60" roll at Walmart. I will cut them in 1/2" strips. I bought 3 rolls and that should be enough.

Ok thanks. So that stuff is pretty strong then? I know actylic can be a little heavy. I also saw mention of carpet tape. I'll look and see what I can get my hands on.

I also did get a roll of the carpet tape. I will be using it just for the aluminum trims that will mounted to the shelve boards and table frame since its really thin.

The Scotch clear and dark grey double sided tape is pretty strong. I used it on various car exterior parts that were exposed to 0-110mph speeds =P

Oh wow. Strong for sure then. Thanks for all the info Positron. Good luck with your attempts at this and please post pics and any lessons learned. Hoping to dig my Granas out of storage and start the process in the coming weeks.

What are you planning to display in it anyway?
