Overly Sarcastic Productions on Youtube have a good ongoing summary of 'Journey Into The West' which is what re-introduced me to the character of Sun Wukong,

OSP Youtube Playlist of Journey Into the West videos

I say re-introduced because I eventually realised I had seen numerous variations and derivations over my life without realizing despite not really being someone into Anime or Manga [like the Avatar, Jackie Chan Adventures and Dragonball Z cartoons, as well as a few live-action series I have buried memories from as a child].

I'm also pretty sure Wukong is just straight up considered a deity and one of the Buddahs in some parts of Asia.

I've not played the game yet, but Im getting this figure for a couple of reasons:
1 - the character design is just too cool not to.
2 - as a great representative of Eastern cultures and mythology to add to my Greek and Egyptian deity figures

Man it's always crazy to see how different feedback is in China compares to the rest of the world. Chinese collectors are going absolutely mental over the tiniest little details not matching game textures and the fact most of the figure is plastic, many of them think the armor looks too mushy and toyish. I really don't see how else they could've translated the in-game model into a figure, die-cast armor would've made this thing ridiculously heavy. The only thing they probably could've done was turn some of the sculpted ropes and knots into actual rope and provide a rooted version for some of the people that want all their InArt stuff rooted. I still think this will sell incredibly well though, especially in China, it's just funny to see how wildly different reception is there compared to the rest of the world.

That's freaken ridiculous. This figure is literally perfect. Nothing here looks cheap and I prefer everything being sculpted. The outrage makes no sense.

OH GOD PLEASE NO DIECAST ARMOR!

They don’t know the horrors of such things. I recently received one of the 3rd party figures of WoW’s lich king (called frozen King)…that POS is EFFIN GODAWFUL. Just not fun to handle. The ‘premium’ feel of diecast armor is NOT worth the pain of simply handling the figure.

I felt the same way with another figure that had diecast armor with better execution in Rocketoys Madara. It was heavy and “felt” expensive. But I ****ing hated handling it.

what is it about a die-cast fig do you hate handling?

Just overall clunky. Getting it into a Nice dynamic pose without it being a balancing act is annoying as hell, and a display stand is ABSOLUTELY necessary even if leaving it in a stoic neutral A stance because the external weight throws the figure off balance. And it’s a nightmare if the stock body doesn’t come with ratcheted joints.

Lastly, you can’t even tell it’s diecast armor unless you handle the thing.

I personally haven’t had any good experiences with diecast armor on a 1/6 figure.

Diecast featured in a robot though? That’s a different story 😄. The placement of the diecast is carefully thought out and placed in areas that won’t affect handling and play sessions I.e knees, elbows, ankles etc etc.

Journey to the west is 1 of 4 greatest novel in chinese culture.
Being the most supernatural one of the 4, we kids were captivated by it from young age…

I think they did use mixed media here. The red ropes on his armor plate are sculpted, but it looks like the ropes on his arms are made of real fabric.

You can see the edges of the yarn pretty clearly as well as the difference in color from the sculpted yarn.

I’m glad the didn’t do full die-cast metal for the armor and all fabric for the ropes. Not only would it have been extremely heavy and hard to pose, it would have also made this prohibitively expensive. The ropes would probably be a nightmare once they start to unravel and come apart.

Everyone complimenting the price point now would have balked at a $850+ piece that basically looks the same.

It's not that ridiculous when you're familiar with collectors in China, you think this place can be nitpicky and bad? You should read some of the forums over there.

I've seen that one, what shocked me the most was the neck peck, or lack thereof, since it's a freaking loose screw! Aside from the armor being die-cast the whole thing reminded me of a cheap Halloween decoration. :slap As far as die-cast armor on this I don't think some people understand how heavy it would be and also it would be way less detailed than plastic armor since die-cast molds are not so good at capturing all those intricate details the armor has.

I know there are some pieces of string in on the armor, I meant doing the same for all of the ropes on it, especially the sculpted knots, to give it that extra flair of authenticity, but I understand why they opted not to.

Yeah, it would have looked more consistent and high end if they managed to use string for all of the knots.

People also forget that these promotional photos are photographed with wildly good 100mm+ macro lens that have greater than 1:1 magnification. When you have this in-hand, the ropes are going to be so so tiny that it will probably be hard to tell they’re sculpted from further than 3 feet away.

I’m guessing this version was their compromise at achieving the look they wanted while managing the costs and logistics of mass production. If InArt already has QC issues now, just imagine people complaining when one of their knots comes untied during shipping 🤣 🫠

How does it compare to the criticisms for the UMAN figure? That one is rooted and looks like the armor has a lot more mixed media going into it, but the face doesn’t resemble the game model very well, so I’m curious if there’s a noticeable priority amongst Chinese collectors

Not a big fan of how the uman armor looks in comparison, even if it has more mixed media. The Inart looks sharper, better detailed, colored, scaled... just more accurate overall. Yeah wish they had a premium wool hair version though.

I agree that InArt's looks MUCH more accurate to the game all around. The actual armor on the UMAN looks really good for other reasons, so it will be interesting to see how it turns out in production. It's honestly just exciting that we have two stellar options, and I'm really thrilled to be getting both

This is probably our best bet if you want a rooted head:

I absolutely love this figure, it's so good and the headsculpt looks so much better than the previous Wukong figure they did, something about that didn't sit right, the head and neck area is so weird.

And yeah I'll take plastic over diecast any day thank you
