I just got back from seeing it a second time, this time with my parents. It was SOOOOOOOOO much BETTER than the first time!

I saw a sneak preview Tuesday night with a friend, and even though I KNEW it wouldn't top RAIDERS, I still left pretty dissapointed. After having time to think about it, and seeing it again, I can definitely say it's nowhere near as bad as the first time, not knowing what to expect. It definitely feels like a true Indiana Jones film the second time. Still has a few flaws, but overall a worthy follow-up.

If you get a chance, try watching it again with some consideration and an open mind.

Okay I know this is really bad it's the best my extremely limited skills could do.

Dammit Tom! I had a serious thought and lost it when I saw that pic and started laughing very hard. :lol :lol
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was too late for me last night to get into my thoughts on this movie. I tried to go in with low expectations because I didn't want to be upset with it.

I don't get the hate with this movie. Is it the best of the series? No, its probably not but I need to see it again to really graps where I would ACTUALLY rank it. Overall, I had a pretty damn good time and I plan on seeing it again and buying the DVD. No, I'm not trying to feed the machine but simply rewatching/buying a film I had a damn good time at.

The first few mins took me a little getting into it but I've never been a HUGE fan of 50 era style movies. The whole drag racing sequence basically. Once Indy stepped on screen it started drawing me in and the fun started going on from there.

Loved the sequence in the warehouse and the homage to Raiders with the Ark. The action and Indy doing what he does to find this crate was cool. It was a lot like what happened in LC which was fine with me. Then you take him going through the bombing town that added something to the movie. What? For me it really put Indy in the decade and what was going on with just being out of WWII for just a few years really. The fridge sequence was alright maybe a little too out there for me and my sister but I just blew by it and kept having fun.

It kind of pissed me off with the whole Indy being accused of possibly being a communist. I seriously wanted to beat the flying muck out of those guys, and actually if any part really bugged me it was that whole he might be a communist thing.

I loved the homage to Jones Sr and Brody when Indy was at his desk. I found the line the other guy said to be very true because I've heard my own Dad say it. You get to the age where life stops giving you so much and taking some of what you love back. I loved that because I think you saw Indy realize that time is short and enjoy the ride/love those around ya.

Then you enter Shia LaBeouf who IMO did a super job in his role and I see where his character might have some potential. I wasn't the biggest fan of the greaser aspect but he did a great job of pulling it off. Then you toss in how he interacted with Ford during the whole thing, and showed moments where he was a little bit short round then goes and acts a little bit like Indy.

When they go looking for the skull that was pretty cool, but I like how it was actually about archeology. Indy doing what he does to find it and getting Mutt out of trouble. Just like Indy always has to do with whoever the sidekick is. The karate guys where maybe a touch strong but I take that as all part of the game like the guys from TOD. Then them finding the bodies and the skull was just freaking awesome. That reminded me of Indy and the Idol in Raiders for some reason. I think it might be the expression on his face.

Indy looking into the skull really helped bring it all together and it worked for me. Mac pulling that trick on Indy pissed me off but it was supposed to tick ya off IMO. Seeing Marion again was great! Though she didn't say a lot but it was nice seeing her back. Indy and the Snake that was freaking great! All I could think about was Raiders when he gets into the plane and freaks out. Mutt not knowing and using it was classic as well.

The battle sequence in the jungle was pretty freaking cool. I thought the pacing of it all was pretty well done and I had no issues with the CGI. The stuff with the Monkeys was nonsense and could have been left out as far as I'm concerned. I know my sister felt the same way about that too. The Ants though I thought was great! I've seen enough National Geographic and Discovery to know there are ants that do this type of stuff. So to me it was believable and fun/sick to watch it all go down. I also loved how the ants stayed away from whoever was holding the Skull. I could also have lived without the multiple nut shots to Mutt. 1-2 ok but after that it was like we get the point.

Once they got into the temple it was again like Raiders for me. Waiting to see exactly how things where gonna pan out for Indy. I loved seeing all the aliens and the look was pretty sweet so it worked for me. Spalko's death was fine with me too. Why? It was a lot like Donovan's death in LC. She did not choose wisely and for that choice paid the ultimate price.

The wedding was nice and I'm glad to see Indy now moving into that phase and am curious to see where this takes him.

Overall, I am sad that some aren't enjoying this movie because I think you're missing a good one. Its no worse than TOD for me or thats where I'm leaning right now. The pacing and the way the all acted off each other was fine. So I got not complaints there. Sure, there where a few moments where I was like ok as I said and a few small others but it didn't kill the movie for me. This was INDY and I can't wait for Indy 5. :rock

The reason I quote myself here is I just got home from seeing it again. My folks wanted to see it and so my sister where all for seeing it again just a few days later. Having seen it a second time in 3 days I feel the same way I did here with the Indy being called a communist still pissing me off quite a bit. I think for me its a 7/10 possibly an 8 but talking with my folks and sister on the way home they say 6/10. However, they all said it was a good movie and will be looking forward to me buying it when it comes out on DVD. :lol

That's 2 down...

Cool, can't wait to see it again since I already liked it I'll probably be ready to marry the damn thing :lol

Here. I spruced it up a bit for you...

:D

Oh, and in case I haven't already mentioned it, I loved the movie! Much better than TOD, in my book. But then, I have always been a huge fan of 50's Sci-Fi, so it had all the elements to be a great ride for me. Atomic explosions, aliens, the Soviet menace, motorcycle chases, and even ELVIS!

I have to see it again, that's for sure!

I think it's the free passes some people are giving it due to it having the 'Indiana Jones' brand that's getting under some peoples' skins... not 'hate' of a mediocre-at-best film. It's almost as if they/we feel tricked in a way. If this film did not have the Indy brand attached, many people 'defending' it would be tearing it to shreds - or simply ignoring it - similar to something like, say, 'The Mummy Returns' (yeah, I said it - another 'enjoyable film if you check your brain in at the door'):

1) The characterizations are really weak - I felt nothing for any of them, least of all any type of real suspense. With good/re-watchable films - I STILL feel suspense, no matter how many times I've seen them.

2) The simple adventure plot (something that stands out so prominently in other Indy films - and other good action flicks) has been bloated beyond recognition. See POTC3 for another overdone plot that takes away from the film as a whole.

3) It's filled with 'filler' CGI stunts that don't add anything to the story... nuclear blast, prairie dogs, vine swinging, etc. - which, if you really think back, most of the other Indy films don't have that filler - pretty much every stunt and effect - no matter how ludicrous - led to the ultimate goal, which is one of the reasons why they are so highly thought of, not only just for their 'fun' factor...they were tightly written and directed.

4) The dialog is stilted and unnatural for most of the film. Not to mention the lighting and sets.

I honestly believe that these are some of the reasons why the positive reviews are mostly lukewarm at best ("aaaawwww, it's Indy and Harrison, we can't be too mean!"), and the negative reviews are pretty darn negative.

Personally I LIKE the plot of interdimensional 'aliens' - it's different and cool. I DO NOT like how it was explained/shown and littered with way too much exposition. It's like they picked a plot that most people have no idea about, and realized halfway through that not many people in the audience would know the Crystal Skull myth, so they threw all kinds of stuff in there to 'strengthen' it. You don't have that problem when you pick a 'MacGuffin' (god I hate that word) that is more familiar, such as the Holy Grail. Even the magic stones from Temple of Doom were much more easily explained. And even then, part of the lure of past Indy films is the UNEXPLAINED. Don't beat the audience over the head with reasons and explanations - just do it, but make it good!

I also wish they had explored Area 51 more in-depth - love the whole conspiracy angle, which they really did nothing with, and I also wish that the whole opening segment had more to do with the plot as a whole. In essence, what the heck did they need that 'alien' body for anyway? It had absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the film! Same with the nuke.

BTW, I just watched the first half of TOD last night, which I also hadn't seen in at least 5 years (probably more like 10), and dang do I love that part when they're stuck in the room with the lowering ceiling and Indy's trying to get Willie to pull the lever and she's flipping out about all the bugs :lol "SHUT. UP." ... "NO, your OTHER right" ... and he sticks his fist through the hole at her. I was rolling :rotfl There was absolutely nothing like that in KotCS. The closest thing was the snake scene, but even then I couldn't laugh because all I was thinking about was, "Why doesn't he just use his whip?" I guess maybe he didn't HAVE his whip, but they how come he had it later to try to save Mac?

Anyway, I'm glad some people are enjoying it, which is the whole reason I didn't want to get into it before more people had seen it. But I just can't enjoy it :( Went in having read NO reviews, no spoilers, no nothing, with very low expectations, and when a film doesn't even reach those, well, there's nothing else I can do - I've already given it the best chance it's gonna get from me.

Why? Last time I checked this is a fan board, nothing official. If I'm not allowed to express my opinion as a 'fan', well now, that would really suck. I still love Indiana Jones right up there with the OT Star Wars. I still LOVE all the product we're getting, and I still respect and admire both Lucas and Spielberg - maybe not for creating a great film this time around, but definitely for creating the series as a whole and what they've been able to make out of it - CULTURAL ICON is a pretty awesome result!

(and... girl not dude ;))

Very well thought out and written Dusty. I agree 100%. I also avoided ALL spoilers and any info from the media about this film. Had no expectations really since it has been a long long time since ive seen any of the older indy films which I absolutely loved. But this movie still disappointed me and was more of a rental imo.

Personally I didn't get the whole stones thing in Doom. Well, no... didn't get sounds like I'm dumb as dishwater, I mean it did NOTHING for me. Some small village lost their rocks... meh... And aside from heart-ripping, what DID they acheive? ToD, for me, has the weakest, tenuious plot out of any of them. Yes, including Skull.

Thw atom bomb sequence, IMO, was there simply to demonstrate the times the film was set, the climate of fear and to show the audience that the setting had moved on. A very dramatic way to do it too.

Saw it yesterday and honestly...I fell asleep thru 1/2 of it. It was probably a combination of not sleeping enough the night before and the movie itself. I guess this is not a fair evaluation but I felt, as well as everyone I saw it with (who were awake), lukewarm to the movie. It was just "ok" - a good rental.
At least we went to see the matinee

People act like all his movies have aliens. I am still pissed none showed up in Schindler's List.

No kidding. Like I said before, Spielberg has directed nearly 40 movies... exactly 4 of them feature aliens. Wow! That's a whole 10% of his filmography!! That means ALL of his movies have aliens, right? Screw the other 90%!!!

See... why let the facts get in the way of some good old-fashioned internet straw man tactics?

Saw it yesterday and I really liked it. The wife hated it. Fortunately for me, nobody's opinion changes how I feel about the movie. :D

:whip:whip:whip

I had a couple of McGuffins today, they're on the dollar menu now so its both affordable and delicious.

Damn You Tom! You stole my joke! Damn you!!!!:wacky

Interesting thing reading these lengthy posts and one thing really sticks out, the calling the positive reviews and defenses lukewarm.....

I don't think its lukewarm, I think that its a bit of slow realization of what the film is. You can say that you stayed away from the spoilers, that you went in with low expectations, that you knew it wouldn't be as good as Raiders, etc, etc, blah, blah. The truth is just look at these boards and the rest of the world, the closer the film got. We all got fanboy and really wanted this film to be amazing. The expectations were amazingly high even from those who claim they weren't....

So what has happened is the stereotypical after Prom sex mentality. Sex is so hyped up when you are that age that you have no choice but to be slightly disappointed after it. As in some cases you have people who immediately go "It was awesome!" and gush about it, which we have in this thread. Some people who go "Really? That was it?" that we have in this thread. Ultimately most who go after repeated attempts "Wow....I really liked it....just needed to participate over and over." Which we see.

The interesting thing will be once the film heads to DVD because then you'll really be able to gauge fans versus those who were just disappointed initially.

Crude analogy? Yes. But it pretty much covers the bases.

Oh.....and I still I want a KOTCS Indy PF to go with my Raiders one. :rock

I just rewatched TOD today and I feel the same way as you. In fact, I might even have to see KOTCS again because I think that one just moved up ahead of TOD as a better movie. :horror

ToD will ALWAYS be number 2 for me... but that's fueled by nostalgia.:D:whip

TOD never had any nostalgia for me because I didn't care much for it even the first time I saw it. Multiple viewings later and I still feel the same way.
