So the new iPhone is being release and I have seen much being said about it here on the forum... Being an Australian, this is my first chance to get one, without having unlock it. I'm glad that my carrier Telstra (biggest, one down under) is getting it with 2 other carriers as well. I work for a company under the Telstra banner, Sensis; they make the yellow & white pages here. So I get the employee discount etc.

So the new phone comes out this Friday and I'm overly excited about it. The new guided tour is up at apple.com/iphone which is a good watch, gets you excited about the iPhone that's for sure.

So how is getting one or upgrading?

I just got my IPhone in Feb and am happy with it. Unless they offer some kind of trade in option I'll keep that one.

Any key differences between the new version vs. the older ones? I know the monthly plan in the US is more expensive, making the newer iPhone also more costly in the long run compared to the older one.

The new one is much cheaper for more storage space. It has GPS and also now works with Exchange Server for email (a big plus for me since I would now be able to get work emails on the iPhone and can't with the old version).

I'm sure there are other differences. I'm definitely thinking about it, I hate the Q that I have now.

I'd get it if I didn't have to buy it directly from AT&T. Then I could unlock it and use it on T-Mobile like my current iPhone.

I'll probably upgrade mine in November or December. I wanna wait and see how the batteries on the new version do. 3G is notorious for sucking battery juice very quickly.

I really wish Apple would take this to other providers. I was going to switch from Verizon to Cingular to get this phone, but then Verizon partnered with OnStar to setup your car phone on a family plan, which is much cheaper than using OnStar minutes and with MA adopting headset laws, that's my best choice, so unless AT&T gets a deal with OnStar or Apple branches out, no iPhone for me, which is too bad cuz I love a lot about it's design.

do you work on a Mac at work?
if so do you know now to have 2 Exchange accounts on Mac's mail client?
Mine seems to only let you configure 1, then the option for exchnage is no longer there when setting up another mailbox...

No, we're all PC at work, that's why we use Exchange Server. On PCs you can configure more than one address. I have 2, my personal one and a generic one for the company.

That's why I rock the Blackberry!! No worries with that stuff. And because all our Execs and VPs and Ps have Blackberrys through Verizon, I got mine for only $150 and I get a 12% discount for my plan.

Was gonna get the new iPhone, as my contract just ended with Verizon on the 2nd, but it just didn't seem worth it to me. Tactile touch screens are cool, but the iPhone just doesn't have the stuff for work I need.

And until they make a 60GB or larger SSD iPhone, then I'd rather stick with my new Classic and the Blackberry.

yeah my entire company is Exchange based.
and I have multiple exchange addresses as well. Just sux the MacMail only seems to allow 1 exchange account to be set up on it. But it does allow multiple accounts. I have 2 others that arent exhcnage accounts set up as well along with 1 exchange.
For my 2nd exchange account I have to log into it thru my browser.... :monkey4

(the art dept is Mac based, the rest of the company is PC)

From what I understand, the one exchange account thing for mail.app and mobilemail.app is a limitation of ActiveSync.

occulum - I'm pretty sure you can set up multiple Exchange accounts with MS Entourage for the mac. For a free solution, I've heard Thunderbird can connect to Exchange with some preference tweaking.

Well, I'd get one if I had some money, but my friend is getting one, so I'll just screw around with that one...

I'd love to get one, but the when and how in Belgium are still unclear. Even if their's an official Iphone provider now, it is still forbidden by law to link a contract to the sale of a mobile phone. So, it is still very unclear how the Iphone will be introduced here. There's already been a delay on the release date of the Iphone.
Ever since the Iphone was a fact I thought the way it's marketed sucked. I hope the day it's officially available here, there are no obligations, whatsoever.

Yep, I'm getting the new model and I'm going to unlock and sell my 1st gen on eBay.

I guess AT&T will be selling one without a contract for $600 :horror

It's actually cheaper to buy the $199 phone, sign the contract and then pay the $175 termination fee.
