Ok I finally got a nice HD tv and was looking at getting a blu-ray player. All I have seen of it was the Blu-ray set up at best buy which was just playing a Cartoon. All I wanted to know was if Blu-ray is amazingly better than a regular DVD? Please help me on if I should get one. :D(sorry to start a new thread on the subject):monkey3

Some say yes....some say no. I say those that say no are blind......especially if you got a 1080p tv and plan to use the HDMI cable. It's an amazing picture.

Hell Yes! Amazing Picture totally worth it....make sure you got 1080P HDTV and use a HDMI cable that can actually transmit the 1080P signal...and no all cables are not created equal....most cant do the 10gpbs needed for true 1080P

For the cost, to me right now it isn't worth it. The player and the movies themselves are going to have to come down in price in order for me to consider it. I'm satisfied with dvd.

I did see the Pirates movies in blue-ray and I thought they were amazing looking, but I can enjoy them just as much by watching my regular dvds.

I'm not blind. I just don't care.

:shrugs:

I will put it like this. When I first watched a Bluray I noticed it was better than DVD. I didn't really see that big of a difference. However, when I went back to watching normal DVDs I couldn't stand the quality and appreciated Bluray all the more. I now only try to watch HD DVDs or Bluray movies now. They just look better.

Is the sky blue? Do dogs bark? Is Jessica Alba hot?

The answer is yes.

Oh yeah! :devil

And to answer the original question, I don't have Blu-ray yet, but I have HD DVD and watch HD programming on DirecTV most of the time. Standard DVD is hard for me to watch now.

Well worth it.

Huge difference compared to DVD, especially on large displays and front projectors.

Buy the PS3, best Blu Ray player there is.

Is that fact or opinion?

It's an opinion many share. I have a PS3 and a stand alone BR player. I like the PS3 because it's linked to my wireless network and I can run any and all updates very easily.

When it comes to architecture is it any different? id think that playing games and movies would really kick the lasers ass

Many tech review websites tout the PS3 as being the best Bluray player on the market.

I'm going to have to say no. I was really disappointed when I first compared a BD to an upconverted standard DVD, the difference was really negligible. But like BadMoon said on the previous page, I learned to love it. I can really see the difference on some BD's but still not all. For me, in order to justify the price, I went PS3. Now I have a Blu-Ray player that also plays video games.

If you're looking for a jump comparable to DVD from VHS, then your princess is in another castle. If you're looking for true HD over upconverted "fake" HD, then Blu-Ray is for you.

If you want to see the difference in a very clear way (pun intended :D), there is a web site that a guy from another forum set up about a year ago that uses a flash application to allow you to do a side-by-side comparison of the same frame from a DVD and a Blu-ray movie.

The only problem is that he seems to have stopped updating the site, so some of the images aren't loading. If you click on one of the links, and you don't see the progress bar showing an increasing percentage loaded for both images, then that particular comparison shot isn't working. But there are still many that do work.

Here's the link:

All of the images are direct screen shots taken on a PC, and there has been no artificial sharpening of the Blu-ray images or blurring of the DVD images. This is by far the most accurate comparison I've ever seen, showing both the good and the not-so-good. But when it's good, it's incredible.

What everyone has said is true the picture is better and you can notice a difference. With that said is it worth, it depends on how important the picture difference is. Regular DVD still look pretty damm good on a HDTV so unless your one of those people who really likes to have the newest things or you really want the better picture its worth it, but if your really on the fence I would say wait until player come down in price.

I can personally tell the difference and by now even my wife notices on the rare instances when we watch a standard DVD. When you get used to the crispness and sharp colors and blacks, it's hard to go back. I would say that for quite a lot of people, the difference is not as amazing as they might have expected, but for me it's definitely there. Even upconverted standard def titles have a softness to them that I can spot most of the time.

Besides the increased PQ, if you have a decent surround system the increased audio quality is awesome as well.

Thanks all for the input. Also thank you Robodad for that link! So is the PS3 the best or is there another that is better. Blu-ray sounds sooooo Freakin Sweet!:chew
