I got this boxset from a friend who lives in Taiwan around a year ago. The chest is made of wood, the latch is made of real metal, the inside is satin lined. I never seen this set on eBay. Is it a mass produced set? (there's a writing on the bottom saying its a promotional set, not for sale)

I've never seen that set before, but it looks amazing. Given that it says it is promotional, I wonder if it was given to distributors or retailers as an incentive for carrying the film. What are the smaller shrinkwrapped items that appear below the DVD in the picture? Cards?

Well im not sure, but my friend who sent this set is a video store manager. Those small boxes are LOTR themed cards.

look at the part that says FOR PROMORTIONAL USE ONLY, NOT FOR RESALE. That means that it was A) a gift from new line to like media or employees or the employees of the company B) gift to members of some form of academy (I have friends in the Motion Picture Academy who get stuff like this) C) they stole it....

Pretty sure somebody posted about this before. I think there was one on Ebay at the time and they were asking about it.

Here you go. Goliath talks about his one (there's 2000 of them) in this thread

Yes, it was said to be produced with an edition size of 2000.

I have had one for a while, but I sold it this year - just couldn't justify having that amount of money bound to another LotR DVD set.

Sorry to say this, but the one posted by samuraiwarrior looks exactly like the Bootlegs of this piece that you can find on eBay all the time.

1. The "Lord of the Rings" writing on top is much too bright.
2. It has two packs of cards, but no bag. The original came with one pack that was housed in a cotton bag with "Lord of the Rings" writing on it.

More information on the original and how to identify a boot at TheImportforums.

He's absolutely correct, mine also looked a bit different (the writing on top of the chest) and came with the (one) set of cards in a cotton bag.

Well its a great bootleg nonetheless. But are you sure its a bootleg? Im 100% certain that the DVDs are original R3 release. I can tell the difference between a bootleg and not. I've seen a bootleg version of EE ROTK and it didnt look like the one from this set. This set is probably a re-release?

that does look like a bootleg to me after seeing goliath's and Dynaheir's posts. but since you can live with it, then that's fine. i noticed one obvious part is the design on the sides, yours looks more like painted on than craved like the original.

the dvd box inside can be original but i mean the whole set as a whole is not. and i think that's what the guys are saying.

this set does look nice and would be a sucker for those who likes anything labeled limited edition. however to me, the only thing that appeals is the wooden box. there isn't that much extras that justify the price to pay, with only some pack of cards extra. i could do without those cards and the bulky heavy box. unless of course they made this set with lots of goodies and extras... then that would really make me wana get this set.

So . . .explain to me again why it costs $210 for this item? Unless it was hand-sogned by PJ himself, I can't see this being worth THAT much.

It is a nice chest, really looks cool and it is limited to 2000 pcs.

Now explain to me why an Uruk-Hai Scout Swordsman statue is worth $ 700 and an Ugluk or Lurtz statue is worth $ 190 only. I guess it's called supply and demand.

The German version of the collector's box of the Fellowship used to sell for $ 250 and still costs about $ 200 now and that's only a cardboard box - just happens to be a cardboard box of which not too many were produced.
