Well, recently I purchased a brand new HDTV. It's a 52 inch Samsung. It arrived last night and I watched some movies in Blu Ray and....

It just might be too good. AS in too High Def! It's so good it's distracting. I can see everything and I sometimes just don't think I should. The picture is so clear it makes things so real which can be a bad thing as well as a good thing. Some scenes now look very acted and on sets. I can tell when the lighting from scene to scene isn't exactly the same as well as the effects like fog or smoke. I can tell what's natural light and what is fake lighting. Peoples heads are giant and kind of scary at times. I was freakin out man. I saw frogs flying at me and doing it on branches so close to my face it made me want to puke. Their little fingers and faces... anthropomorphosis occurred.

Now, not to sound snotty nosed or anything but I am wondering if any of you have gone through this. I want to get used to this but at the same time I kind of miss the soft glow that movies tend to usually have that tie everything together visually. I watched Casino Royale last night and some scenes looked like they were filmed using a home camera, a really really really great home camera but you get the picture- too real. Maybe I just need to move back a little. :lol

Make sure you aren't using that silly "Smoothing 120hz" thing. That will ruin movies for you. It makes everything look like sets and the movement waaay too realistic.

That is what I have on there...that's what I was trying to describe! :lol how do you take that off? I haven't had a chance to peruse the manual yet unfortunately.

Oh yeah, turn that off. Its probably buried deep in the menu system. I was messing with one at a store and it took me 5 minutes to figure out how to turn it off.

That 120hz thing is making your TV double the framerate. Movies are supposed to be at 24 frames per second and that's what make a movie look like it does. Also the 120hz thing takes out the film grain which helps the movie feel. Both of these things will kill how a movie looks and feels.

I will have to mess with this option because honestly I was a little put off. It was so distracting because I began to analyze every detail instead of just sinking into the movie.

It's a very cool option. When I first turned on the tv the first movie I popped in was Pirates on Blu ray. It was incredible. The ocean looked absolutely real and perfect and it was like Depp was right in my living room but I am sure if I had watched the whole movie through it would have ultimately been too distracting. Interesting turn of event. :lol

By the way guys- be careful when watching Planet Earth in Surround Sound- it's kind of frightening. :lol

Do most people prefer the 120hz option? Is it the future, will it stick around and be mandatory technology? I think I could get used to it but I don't know. I want to get used to it. It's very cool for the first 5 minutes of a film.

Are movies naturally filmed at this rate or is the TV just doing a crazy trick? I want to watch the movie as the directer intended me to see it.

Dude. Frogs. Everywhere.

The TV is doing a trick. LCD has a problem with being slower than the Blu-ray player or similar item. LCD had to speed up the image processing and a by-product of this is the 120hz mode. It's all a trick and looks great at a TV store but in real life its ultimately annoying unless you are watching sports or something like that.

Even if a movie is filmed in HD or its a CG movie they will still fake a 24 fps framerate and add film grain just to give it that film look. We are trained to like that look and anything cleaner will look strange to us.

It looks like you are watching extra features for the entire movie.:lol:lol:lol

So now I am torn. I found out how to turn off the feature and now the difference is between watching a movie that looks really good and actually being there. The 120hz made me feel as though I was really seeing what was there because the motion was so fluid. Really evident when you look at something like the ocean. I enjoyed it for it's realism for sure. Maybe I should just use it for surfing movies and nature films to get the it's too real effect. :lol

I think I may try to watch movies with the effect on low for a bit. You can adjust it to be off, low, medium, high, and demo. Like I said I really enjoy the realism but I will have to see if I can handle it. It was almost getting me a bit nauseous from the movement. Maybe the answer is to move my sofa a bit back as well.

The first time I saw 120hz was in the store and it was showing Batman Begins, where young Bruce fell into the well and the bats all came flying out. As you can imagine, it looked freaking amazing. I think 120hz is a double edged sword. For me it's a way to watch movies I've seen before b/c it slows things down so my eyes can process everything on screen better. It's almost like the letterbox vs full frame version of a movie back in the day in the sense that you notice things you many not have seen before. Congrats on the TV BTW, Samsung is a great brand. Did you buy it locally?

I agree Rich. It's almost like learning to re-watch movies and enjoy them in a different way than before.

I actually purchased the TV through Amazon. In store they are usually a bit more expensive and I had a bunch of gift cards for Amazon so... it was an ideal situation. :D

One thing is for sure, I must watch a Blu Ray surfing film in 120hz. It will actually feel like I am right there in the action. On those huge waves I might freak out just a little. :lol
