LOL! So I am watching "The Wizard". This movie was made in 1989. Probably before most of you were born or at least able or into games. At least in these threads. Was this Nintendos first attempt at the Wii? Makes sense now retrospectively. This was the second big movie that had video games as its primary focus. The first and the best IMO was "The Last Starfighter". However, have they been thinking about Wii since the 80's? And if so can Microsoft or Playstation even compete? IDK! I just found it interesting because I totally forgot about the Power Glove for a while and seems like they were thinking this all along.

Are you kidding I loved this movie when I was a kid! :lol When this movie came out, it was the first time American kids were able to see Super Mario Bros. 3, which hadn't been released yet in the U.S.. It was so exciting.

Nintendo was really a sort of gaming technological prophet back then, but then again in those times (and in the short few years after), lots of gaming hardware manufacturers just threw a bunch of stuff at the wall to see what would stick.

Nintendo really deserves a lot of credit for the innovative products they have created over the last 20 years. I mean they practically invented hand held gaming, or at least revolutionized it. Before Nintendo, the coolest hand held video games were made by Tiger and those sucked by comparison.

How about Virtual Boy? Even though it failed, it was still pretty cool for the time. It just hurt your eyes after a while. Donkey Konga was a lot of fun too!

I saw "the Wizard" at the movie theater. It was awesome seeing Mario 3 there for the first time. Even got a small issue of Nintendo Power for free going to see it. But yeah, Power Gloved sucked. The light gun and SNES light bazooka were OK though, if memory serves.

As for being the 2nd big movie with video games as the main focus, you forget the best of all--Tron. I did love Last Starfighter as a kid, though.

What? I'd say a lot or most of us that visit this section are children of the 80's. I was born in 85 myself and was playing games heavily in 89.

Me too. That was the golden age IMO :monkey3
The end of the wizard always makes me :monkey2

unfortunately i remember this film. that snob with the power glove was bragging cuz he owned all 52 NES games or something like that. then he took out some special lock box and opened it up revealing them all. i remember the first look at SMB 3 which is one of the best games nintendo ever did. that game stole many hours of my life. but well worth it.

Yea they can. I have a 360 and a Wii. I used the 360 on Sunday and I haven't played anything on the Wii since prolly last april. Wife uses it to exercise.

The video game world is so mercurial. Who knows who will be on top in the next console generation. Nintendo is known for innovation and were the ones that single handedly brought console gaming back to life after the Atari era killed it, but I think the popularity of Nintendo today has been shaped by what companies like Sega, Sony, and Microsoft have done over the last 2 decades. This was accomplished mainly through observation of what these competitors have done and reacting to it.

So... I don't hold much stock in the idea that the Wii's concept was born of the Power Glove's creation.

If only they thought of games like DDR back then rather than crappy Track and Field games.

I never had the glove, but by all accounts it was pretty weak... but damn did it look cool.

Kind of like Reebok Pumps :lol
