Just cancelled Major Blood. This is what I left as my reason.
If that makes me a bandwagon fan so be it. Its pretty hard to stay interested in a company or line that doesn't want to release product. The real reason they don't want to release items is they believe they can generate the same amount of revenue by delaying releases but increasing prices. Sure, their quality might be improving, but in the end I wouldn't really enjoy knowing I spent $200 on a single toy no matter how great it was.
Nah, bandwagoning would be dropping it, and selling off all the other ones you already have in hand at a loss just to be rid of them becuase you no longer have any interest in the line, so you can use all that money to buy 1 or two die-cast iron mans
But do you really believe that sideshow is " Releasing less of them at a higher price to make more profit?"
You can't seriously tell me that from a production aspect, these figures cost more than 20-30$ a pop to produce and even THEN, I'm skeptical that it's that much. ( and yes, that 20-30$ includes what they pay their artists/sculptors/prototype painters, etc).
so asuming that.
lets round up to 180$ per figure. and lets say 3 figures a year.
so that's a total of 540$ per year for the joe line.
at 30$ apiece ( asuming high) that's 90$ cost to make, so then 450$ profit
With an average edition size of 3000 per figure ( And that's regular version + exclusive version)
that's 450$ profit, times 3000 units, that's 1350000$
Now, we do not know the specifics of the hasbro liscensing deal. but let's just assume it's 10% of the profit margin for the sake of this example.
That leaves 1215000$ as the prifit sideshow makes.
Verses, lets see, 6 releases a year, at 100$ apiece.
420$ profit, times 3000, that's 1260000,
minus the liscensing fee, that's 1134000.
That's a whopping.... 81000 dollar difference.
To a major company, that's NOT a lot of money. it's not even 100k.
would they be happy that it's generating them an additional 80k?
I'm sure they are. They're a buisness. I'd be shocked if they weren't.
But at the same time, I can't see an increase of 80K being the Sole motivator.
Not only that, butr this also relies on a 100% sell-through of every figure released.
I'd like to point out that Regular edition Zartan is still avalible.
HOWEVER, I do think you're on the correct track. Sideshow only has so many employee's. this means they can only make so many products a year. some of them are 1/6th scale figures. But only a limited number of TOTAL figures can be made a year, regardless of the line to which they belong ( star wars, Walking dead, Joe, DC, etc)
By spreading all those figures across those separate lines, they're able to reach a broader customer base, and then Actualy Sell MORE figures over all, by diversifying their avalible resources.
And THAT'S how they're making more money.
