How come you never see rich eighty-something year old women with 18-30 year old men? Why is this situation acceptable?
Didn't that Ashtun Kutchner guy marry Demi Moore when she was 60 and he was 18 or something? Also, I think Tina Turner married a much younger guy.

But of course, the reason is that women get with men based on what they can provide in a material/security sense, and men get with women based on physical ability to create babies. So, men are much less monogamous by nature than women, etc. That's just the way we evolved, I'm afraid.

Are you guys James Cameron worshippers
I don't know how you got that from this thread. Sure, there are gonna be a couple of those in every thread, but the whole nature of the article is that his personal life is a dysfunctional mess.

Yes and that's being honest.

You knew where I was going with that didn't you? Its just some people who claim to hate Titanic actually liked it along with everyone else when it first came out. People like 2 of my brothers. They looked around at all the teenyboppers with their DiCaprio posters and playing Celine Dion constantly and they decided they needed to disassociate themselves from all that and suddenly...they don't like Titanic anymore. Jumped right on the backlash bandwagon.

I still think it deserved its Best Picture that year. What else was out? If you can't remember without looking it up then that may say enough.

I'd have to look it up because I don't remember the release date for Titanic much less every movie that came out that year as well.

I should have been clearer I meant just among the other films nominated for best picture that year. Oscars 1998 I think it would have been. I haven't looked it up, I can't remember what else was in the category.

i really liked titanic and i'm not the least bit ashamed to say it. i'm comfortable enough in my own skin to not give a sh-t whether i'm perceived as uncool for liking it.

to me it was a very solid film, with some corny dialogue. but that was the extent of its flaws. the 3rd act of the film was superbly paced and quite exciting. and despite what the detractors say, the romance did work thanks to the performances. kate and leo sold the crap out of their roles.

I concur. The love story worked for me although when I watch the film now I tend to focus more on the ship, the sets they built, the CGI mixed in and obviously the details of the sinking. Bought a big multi dvd set of Discovery Channel documentaries about the wreck too. Its still fascinating stuff wondering what the wreck would have looked like if it could have been found 10 or 20 years before it was, how much of it will still be there in another 20 years and so on.

And Celtic theres no 'obviously' about not liking the film now after having liked it when you were younger. There needn't be any correlation there. I liked it when I was younger and I see no reason to suddenly dislike it now that I'm older. Its not Power Rangers here.

I've never watched Titanic all the way through, just bits and pieces. Just not my thing.

And Cameron is a prick. :D

i agree to a certain extent. a good film is a good film, and transcends time. but sometimes, with certain movies, we tend to be less discerning when we're younger. and when u watch it again many years later, the appeal has worn off. i think that may be more to do with the film not aging well though.

All the Star Wars prequels come to mind. Aside from AOTC, I liked them when I saw them. Watching them now...unbearable. Horrible films.

I couldnt stand anything in the movies. And this was before all the hating really started.

Him being a prick is irrelevent to his films. :D
I don't know. Being an egomaniacal bastard allowed him to refuse Giger's input on Aliens, as well as refusing studio and actor input on his films. Though this might be a formula for disaster in some instances, it seemed to work out for him so far. I'm also sure that the tension on the set helped some actors to perform better.

I'm not a fan of Cameron based on the way he treats those he works with, and frankly, I didn't like Titanic at all and haven't even bothered to see Avatar yet. But to say that he isn't talented would be disingenuous. He is insanely talented as a film-maker. But then, being a great creative mind and artist does not go hand in hand with being a good guy. Never really has.

Not that you asked me but I would have given 1997's Best Picture Oscar to either L.A. Confidential or Gattaca. That doesn't make me a part of Titanic's backlash though, it was definitely a great movie.

Hmm. In fairness LA Confidential is a very good film. However I enjoyed Titanic more and have watched it more often than LA.Conf.

Titanic had every element (whether you agree or not) to make it what it was. It had an amazing score, a story that catered to women (Women = men come too, or else) good direction and quality acting.

After that, word of mouth takes its course.

True, but you left out the most important quality of all. Titanic had Bill Paxton :lecture

Well said. Last 30 minutes was also very intense. I still love it.

Avatar also rocked.
