Country music is a huge institution, and one of the fastest growing genres out there and Taylor Swift is huge in in. Moreover, unlike most young people thrust into this environment she is doing a remarkable job of not getting out of control and letting it go to her head. She writes and performs her own music and has even written songs for other artists like Kelli Pickler that have become hits. Granted, the material is the kind of thing one should expect from a 19 yr old kid. Issues that are relevant to her and kids her age and also universally common. We all went through high school and most of us had someone we pined for, or been dumped by, or had a good relationship with.
My daughter absolutely loves Taylor Swift and its really nice to have someone she can look to that has shown what can happen with hard work, dedication, talent and not getting out of control. The fact that she has this level of success without tales of drunkenness and sex tapes, or beating cars with umbrellas and forgetting your panties shows she isn't your typical pop queen.
I'd rather my kid listen to the messages in Miss Swift's music than those found in a vast amount of hip hop and rap.

By the way, what is it that makes Swift's music country, exactly? I only know of her from her radio hits, but apart from the odd pedal steel or fiddle in the background, it sure sounds like pure, 100% "pop" to me. I'm not expecting her to be Hank Williams or anything, but I really don't see any of the "country" style in there at all.

Yeah, it is pretty sad what passes for good music these days. The good thing about it is that in 5 years we will all forget about these guys. None of the "artists" today have the lasting power of Madonna, Michael Jackson, Springsteen, Aerosmith or any of the greats.

Country music itself has been moving in that direction ever since Shania Twain had her first hit, but clearly her 1st hit referencing Tim McGraw would have no impact on anyone that didn't know who McGraw was.

She classifies herself as country as said in her speech at the VMAs and so does her record company. While not traditional country to some its no different than I hear from a lot of country music stars as of late.
