I just finished watching the Total Recall remake (mostly out of curiosity) and one thing other than the story was really bothering me...

...the constant addition of simulated Lens Flare in nearly every scene. Even scenes where there was no obvious bright lighting, there was still lens flare! J.J. Abrams used it alot in Star Trek as well, but while that too was irritating, at least there were actual bright lights from which the lens flare could have come from. I swear, I think if the Total Recall Director (Len Wiseman) had shot a scene in complete darkness, he still would have added lens flare.

Technically, camera and lens creators have gotten to the point where the equipment used all but eliminates lens flare, but leave it to hack Directors to add it in.

I might be in the minority, but I found that the lens flares in Star Trek added to the feel of the movie. :dunno

That's because they were real. But I agree, Lens flares are getting annoying.

Only because that seems to be the only thing that is an indication for quality. Everything has lens flares now. Commercials, video games, movies.....I wouldn't be shocked if books started sperting lens flares out of the pages.

WHY DOES HALO 4 have LENS FLARES? We don't see lens flares like that...it just makes it look generic.

If you're wearing a helmet then there would be some kind of optical effect.

It's just a style of the times.

Kind like how movies and tv shows in the late 70's all used a soft blur.

Since they were made. JJ stood behind the camera shining flashlights into the frame.

yep, trek flares were real. And flares are also magnified by using animorphic lenses which create a streak of light across the glass when hit with a direct source of light. I like it when Abrams does it since it seems organic when he uses it, but I hated them in Total Recall. you could tell they weren't real.

Well no. It's a stylistic choice.

I'm fine if Spielberg, Abrams and Bay do it. They sorta are the "masters" of the technique. Everyone else should find their own schtick. :lol
