Super cool collection!
But how do you afford two places in the current Toronto real estate market? Wouldn't it be easier to just pay for storage then a mortgage on a condo?
Well, only my place is in downtown Toronto, then the other is my wife’s in Mississauga.
And the answer is simple. Work!
Storage? Storage is not an investment, more like a rent “burden cost".
You end up with nothing in the end. Which is why we should all try to get out of renting ASAP. I used to waste 12k a year in rent.
If you think about it for a moment, after 30 years of renting we end up with nothing, other than a $360k loss. On the other hand if we use those 12k a year or a bit more, lets say $15k to cover instead, mortgage, property tax, maintenance fees, etc, over a term of 30 years, at the end the property is yours, and if you sell, you end up with 300k-500k in your hands.
Then at that point in time, which should be in your retirement golden years, you can choose to either scale down and pocket the difference or just rent and enjoy that money. Either way is better than renting for 30 years and reach retirement with 300k-500k less.
Also if you have all in storage, I guess chances of something "bad" happening to your goods are higher than in a 24 hrs concierge condo building.
Usually in storage the collection ends up all in boxes, cause space is reduced and you can’t really enjoy any of the models. At least this way I go once every week or two and spend some time in the evening with my hobbies or some other times we spend the weekend cause it’s close to the lakeshore with the family.
Looking to get a house in the future in Mississauga, big enough for all the family and hobbies. Mind you I have many other hobbies too, such as, Bikes, Astronomy (11 telescopes, two of which are monsters), N scale train layouts, Warhammer, etc. So I will really need some space to have all under one roof and for that I will need lots of $$$$.
So for the time being I am just building equity.
