It really does suck to see it go. It's become a landmark of sorts, a tourist site and a symbol of an aspect of the city's urban history; a culture that started here and spread worldwide.
It was only a matter of time and I'm surprised that it stood this long. The place has been condemned, so the owners haven't been pulling in rents for a few years now. That's the least of it; the numbers that developers are throwing at property owners in Long Island City is insane. This piece of land could've been a 40 story high-rise like 8 years ago; I'm surprised that the owner even held out this long.
The way the white washed everything overnight was pretty s__tty though. I guess he wanted to cut the debate at the head and move on. The cool thing is there will be a huge wall on the property after the condos are built where the owners will let the artist piece again
