I can't believe there's no talk about Life of Pi!

I saw it tonight in 3D. It was beautifully, even masterfully created. I loved it from beginning to end. Parts were surprisingly brutal, while others extremely touching.

Newcomer Suraj Sharma holds the weight of the film on his shoulders as well as any A-list actor could, while the fleeting supporting characters are portrayed well, too. The weakest actor was Rafe Spall, but his role is minor and he probably did the best he could with the rather uninteresting role he was offered.

Besides Sharma's acting skills, the most impressive thing about the movie are the visuals. From what I understand, Richard Parker and the rest of the animal cast were nearly completely computer generated. Amazingly, they are all photorealistic - especially the four animals we get to see the most. My friend and I kept whispering about how we know "that can't be real, but it looks completely believable!" We were pretty blown away.

One of the most shocking scenes in the film was when the animals Pi has managed to save turn on each other. As it turns out, putting a tiger, zebra, orangutan, and a hyena on a lifeboat does not bode well. While gore was at a minimum, this scene would probably be pretty frightening to young viewers. I felt sympathy for the majority of the animals, as they believed the life boat was their savior. Once hunger sets in, the hyena's ravenous appetite seemingly cannot be stopped - or can it?

The ending gave me the perception of a "choose your own" sort of thing, though the very last shot, in my opinion, led me to believe one story over the other. Do you believe Pi's story took place with animals, or people? I'd like to hear other's thoughts on this.

Yep amazing movie. Just saw it.
There should be WAY more talk about this movie.
Masterful movie making and the visuals are amazing.
Must see in 3D.
Movie has heart and is just good story telling. Even at the end it has you wonder and question something about the story.

is it just me. i wanted to see the real thing unfold. shift it from an eyegasmic experience to mind**** thriller of some sort instead. :dunno

I didn't see this move but for those that did did you really think it had better visual effects than The Hobbit, Prometheus and Avengers? Nothing I saw in any of the trailers or clips suggested that it would for me.

I think it deserved to win because it was effects laden but you only noticed it for maybe 5% of the time.

If you watch the animation of the tiger then it's pretty incredible

I'm wondering what will end up with the visual effects industry--the studio that did the effects for Life of Pi is shutting down, which is a pretty major FX studio, it's not the only one. Last year Digital Domain lost its Florida studio, and recently Pixomodo in London is being shut down.
The issue of why it's happening is that the studios have no leverage, the film projects shop around their projects to get the costs down as much as possible and so when a studio does get a project they don't usually make much money off it. Artists then get fired right after a project or in these cases, the studio just doesn't catch up and has to shut down (or in DD's case horribly mismanaged by the CEO).

That was my thought as well based on the trailer and seeing the other 3. Nothing about this movie looked like Oscar worthy in anyway especially bigger awards like BD when you had Spielberg/Lincoln.

Your opinion is only informed by 3 trailers sooooo... :dunno

Most definitely, especially The Hobbit. A well deserved win.

I believe this rightfully won for visual effects. The effects were incredible - it was rare that something jumped out as "CGI" to me. A few problems that I remember include the elephant, and one or two shots of the tiger that didn't feel quite completed. But honestly, as a whole, I was so impressed with the work that I forgave any of its few shortcomings. Almost the entire movie was CGI, to be honest, but you wouldn't necessarily know that if you weren't a film buff.

I don't think most of the movie was CGI, they shot a bunch of it in a water tank, about 20 shots actually had a real tiger but if they didn't have the tiger they would still have Pi and the boat.
