I'm about to just get the multicolored Dioder strips. They look pretty close to the original "white" anyway.

I ended up with the following solution for my detolf. It's a neat solution in my opinion as you can basically see no wire at all and it's very easy to install. No drilling etc., just some double sided tape.

The Dioder strips are pointed inwards of course.
I intend to take out the second last shelf since I will display the 1/4 Enterbay T 800 BD there.

Nice diagram :clap

Would you mind posting a picture of one of these completed? Would be interesting to see how well you can hide the wires doing it this way.

i think the lighting will be more consistent if you connect all four strips together on one or both sides. You might not even need to buy another set because i think 2 strips per shelf will be very bright.

Actually from the lighting perspective two strips covering either side may not give you the best lighting setup. Google
Photography lighting setups. Light strips from both sides will create less natural condition and flood the figures too much removing shadows needed to define depth.

@erictong and Geil: Thanks! Those are valid remarks. :goodpost:

I will check it out once the Enterbay T-800 has arrived. To put the strips only on one side is an easy fix.

Also of NOTE: When I used SERIES and PARALLEL terms above, this is in reference only to the wiring and segment placement, this is not describing the circuit which includes the printed LED ribbon strip. So when you go research SERIES and PARALLEL electrical connections on your own, this is not what I'm referring to. Wiring LED ribbon pieces in series does not mean you have a series-based circuit.

This is because the LED ribbon is a printed circuit board and the LEDs on it are already wired in a parallel configuration for every 3 units. So it's actually impossible to make a proper electrical series circuit (one where the voltage is divided evenly by the load). Example: placing 4 bare LEDs in series (positive wired to negative, and so on) with a 12v power source gives each LED 3v. Placing 4 in parallel (all the positives wired together and all the negatives together) gives each LED 12v.

Hey Pixelpiper, you mentioned to use 28awg wires to connect from LED strip to strip. Will this work too? Just found these for free. Not sure what awg they are. They seemed very stiff and heavy duty.

That looks like 18awg thermostat wire - it will absolutely work. Very overkill for the job, but definitely no problems as far as minimum wire gauge.

What you want to watch out for is strain on the solder connections when you're moving things around during the install - the wire is much stiffer than the LED ribbon so it won't twist or move around as easily.

The best lights to use in the Detolfs are the "Dioder Four Pack".

There are four lights per pack. I use one pack per Detolf with great effect.

These are ultra thin, and emit very little heat. You can easily hold the palm of your hand against them for hours :)

They are so light, that mine are only affixed with the supplied double-sided tape. The light is also more natural and bring out more details of the figures.

Here is the link to them on the IKEA Australia website for more info:

You will need to check with your IKEA for your local pricing.

Cheers

Would like to know if these can be used straight out of the pack, ie stick lights to the Detolf's, plug in the power point and off it goes. Or do they need to be attached to something else before it will work? I'm thinking of getting 7 of these.

Also, are there anyone from New Zealand here who knows where to get them from in NZ? If not, are there any Aussie brothers who can help a fellow NZ brother acquire these in AUS?

Plug and play right out of the box. These are great as are the Dioder strips.

Unfortunately the Dioders LED lights emit a "warm white" which is a yellowish white light. They originally had a higher color temp which emitted a brighter white light.

Does it still look good? Do you have a image that shows the difference between the new and original light?

Wow, I wasn't aware of the change in the Dioder lights. They aren't bright white like they used to be that's for sure. A "warm" light was a good description for them. Confirmed this today after installed both Dioder strip and spot light units. They don't look bad at all, just an unexpected surprise from the old Dioder units I was used to.

I'm confident enough to put money on the table that the reason they switched over to warm white is because they received too many returns and/or complaints about the color temperature on the original bright-white versions. The vast majority of people would likely have been disappointed hooking up their new lights and finding they didn't complement their already-installed (likely incandescent or warm CFL) ceiling and lamp lighting.

If anyone wants cooler bright-whites, go the LED ribbon route via Amazon or eBay. If I was able to have more than 500 "characters" in my signature I'd include such a note in it. ;)

They definitely did stand out in the presence of normal household light fixtures so that logic makes a lot of sense. Wish they had the both versions available to choose from, it's not like they don't have a ton of LED variations as it is.
