Iron Man was all but considered obscure, and at the time, nothing more than a hated B-lister (his book sales were at an all time low and fans hated him for supporting the Superhero Registration Act which exposed secret identities and held him directly responsible for Captain America's death since he'd had Cap arrested and Cap was murdered while in custody). But he wound up launching the juggernaut Marvel franchise and is easily one of the most popular heroes on their roster today.

Well, DC has to get some kind of successful franchise started outside of Supes and Bats at some point. Throw anything out there and see what sticks! They've been looking like a bunch of eunuchs with their own major players compared to the ballsy swagger with which Marvel has been pushing out their benchwarmers.
