Great comparison pics. I didn't know GG did LOTR busts. GG's Viggo is definitely better. Kinda prefer GG's Gandalf. Give a sl edge to SS Ringwraith for the texture in the clothing, but the pose and total composition goes to GG. From these pics, gotta give GG the edge. Their poses are more dynamic as they use more upper body in the piece. I'm guessing their price is waaaay more reasonable too. Just saw their Saruman on ebay for 35.00! Looks very nice too. Hmmm.:D

Thanks for the comparisson pics Pizza! :rock

Although I'm collecting the GG Busts and I like the price and that they're typically full upper body, in terms of detail and overall quality...

Weta > GG

...hands down. I still have a couple Weta busts and the detail is just so much better. Look at the Ringwraith cloak or Gandalf's beard as an example.

Those look great together. I do like the likeness on the GG Viggo more but would have to maybe give a slight edge to the SSW Gandalf & Nazgul.

Nice pictures ! All around, very comparable. The GG Aragorn and Gandalf have a better likeness, with the light up staff a real nice addition. The two ringwraith's are close as well, with the SS version having the better clothing texture and the GG the more dramatic pose and metal sword. I'd give the slight overall edge to GG.

While I've collected both.... I have to give it very slight edge to GG. I know there are alot of DIEHARD Weta nuts out there that nothing will ever come close to the Weta pieces. I think the GG pieces suffer from the paint ops of todays pieces, if they had the paint jobs of some of the earlier weta pieces then there would be no slight edge it would be GG in my book.
It blows me away some of the earlier SS/Weta pieces had just amazing paint jobs. Then Theoden came along.....

What?? The GG Aragorn likeness is awful. And the Weta ringwraith bust is much better, if I wanted a dynamic pose I'd buy a statue. The GG busts just look too 'clean' and plasticy. Weta wins hands down here

WHat????ahahahhaha Weta Aragorn likeness is awful! The Weta ringwraith has more detail but just don't like the one arm look. If I wanted the one arm look I would go for the three legged dog.
Like I said, too some there will never be anything other than Weta. No matter how well done.

Is anyone disputing the Weta busts are more detailed than the Gentle Giant Busts? I'm not talking about likeness, accessories, etc. just the detail of the sculpt.

i think comparing the two companies are like apples and oranges. both have their merits. i have a weta wraith bust next to the nazgul steed and they look great together. what i like about weta is they are created by the people that worked on the film. the hu-man likeness may not be the greatest, but the detail to costume and the materials used in the monsters are outstanding.

Following that line of thinking, if the GG Aragorn is awful then the SSW Aragorn must be downright brutal :rotfl....cause it certainly doesn't look anything remotely close to Viggo. I think the point here is that both lines have their strength's and weaknesses, and when you do an honest evaluation of the two lines , the general consensus seems to be they stack up very evenly to each other.
If you are so blindly entrenched with the attitude that nothing can or ever will be able to compete with Weta, then why even bother with comparisons?

Hey Pizza,

Thanks so much for shooting the great comparison photos! Having them side by side really helps you see the strengths of each. And the way you composed the Gandalf photo is the best!

Firstly, I never said the SSW Aragorn bust likeness was good. I just said I don't think (in my opinion) the GG one is any better.
Secondly, I never said that anything will ever be able to compare with Weta. The tag 'Weta is better' under my username was put there before the Weta line even finished, way before any other lotr lines were announced, I just thought it a catchy title ;)

No, the SSW Aragorn bust likeness isn't great, but I don't get the same feeling of quality from the GG busts, in detail etc....generally I don't like busts to have more than the head and shoulders, with possibly one arm, that goes for all busts, not just lotr. Otherwise they're just like mini statues, and give (me) the impression of the company or sculptor just trying too hard.

I agree 100 % with FrodoEyes!

took the words out of my mouth, we seem to have the exact same opinion about this matter :D

It is true the GG busts don't seem to have the same detail to them [at least clothing wise] and I would certainly like them to be 1/4 scale as opposed to 1/6 scale, but I do like the originality [ metal swords, light up staff's and palantirs, removable helmets, etc...] and the more lifelike human appearance of GG. It may seem like GG and/or the sculptors are trying to hard but what are they supposed to do? They have to do things differently and take a different approach...it would be pointless for them to simply make a line of busts that imitate or resemble that which has already been done [and very successfully] by Weta.
