production costs will determine the format war

like vhs vs betamax, betamax was the superior format but vhs won due to equipment & production costs

IMO

Actually that is not the reason VHS won against Betamax. Sony would not allow Beta to be used for pornography. Because of that decision, VHS became the dominant format even though the Betamax technology was superior.:monkey1

It is likely that the cross-mojonation by you two will lead to a format neutral release.

At least Digital Playground is now releasing porn on Blu-ray. :D

I actually do own a PS3/Blu-ray now, and am very happy with it -- it's the only HD format in Croatia, and it's gaining ground fast, although it's still very much in its infancy. I still haven't bought an HDTV yet, as these babies cost twice as much as they do in the US, and I don't want to end up with an obsolete screen. That's a much bigger (and a much more important) investment in HD than any actual player -- and having gotten my PS3 from the US, it was cheap indeed. Now to see what happens with the format war, as it seems to be entering the endgame.

Andy -- I'm not sure the 51 gig HD DVD is going to be a reality any time soon, as it's not an actual layer multiplier (15 gig single layer, 30 gig double layer -- surely the triple layer would be 45 gig? They seem to have pushed it a bit) so it might require tweaks and whatnot. It still hasn't been demoed anywhere, and it's anybody's guess on when it will be out. The 100 gig quadruple-layer Blu-ray has been demoed, but it's still four layers on one disc, and people are saying it's just going to be used for data -- Blu-ray has this whole computer data storage aspect to it, it's not just a movie format.

Truth be told, both formats are still such infants, and such troublesome infants at that, that they still haven't reached anything resembling long-term viability yet. Some people say there's only room for one in the nest, like baby eagles, others say two can live comfortably alongside each other, like baby sparrows. Who knows.

Hopefully the really big deals like the LOTR movies will wait until both or one mature to the point where we can get the extended films in a healthy bitrate with no compression artifacts and lossless audio. Hopefully on one disc. The two-disc thing is psychological, yes! -- but then so is the lack of need to get up and change the disc midway through the film. It's perfectly fine to have separate extras discs, one or more, but the film should be as perfect and as future-proof as possible.

Oh, and here's another thing I thought of recently -- remember PJ saying that there are many scenes he kept for the 25th anniversary edition? Stuff like the Silent Watchers? Wouldn't it be cool if these end up being the films he puts on the eventual hi-def release?

Plus deleted scenes and all the other stuff that NEVER got released. I want my Arwen on Asfaloth at Helm's Deep, dammit!

Blu-Ray... HD... Who cares !!! Just do both, get it done already... but for gosh's sake !!!! It better be the boxed editions !!!!

I NEVER bought the regular versions waiting for the extended cuts...

If Blade Runner can do it in a five disc set... why can't we have our RINGS !!! :emperor

That new Blade Runner set is totally upping the ante, isn't it? :D

Let's see -- my dream edition of LOTR in HD would include:

  • Theatrical Cuts;
  • Extended Cuts;
  • Mega-Extended Cuts mentioned by PJ;
  • All the extras from the TC and EE releases, and the FULL Costa Botes docu;
  • All the deleted scenes and concepts;
  • Lossless audio.

And you shouldn't be forced to change discs when watching a particular cut, from beginning to end.

Estimated date of arrival of this thing: Right before the release of The Hobbit, Movie 1: There And (for the first disc) to right before the release of The Hobbit, Movie 2: Back Again.

And not a month earlier...

what this guy said.:drool:drool:drool

Never heard of the 'FULL Costa Botes docu' - any website that I can find out more??

I am hoping they will produce the FULL footage of the ROTK NZ premiere... I thought that is the most grand of all...

Even the whole thing is 10 blue-ray discs will be worth it! Bring it on man!

I followed the link you gave me, and I see this in the FAQ"

Still have questions about this release? Here are some Frequently Asked Questions from fans.

When Is The Lord of the Rings Going to Be Released in High Definition (Either HD-DVD or Blu-ray)?

The high definition formats that have recently launched offer exceptional picture and sound quality in addition to new interactive bonus feature capabilities. New Line Home Entertainment is committed to the high definition format and is very excited about the idea of releasing the Trilogy in the format. However, New Line is also committed to maximizing the capabilities of the technology to deliver a cutting edge high definition experience. This will take more time as well as the participation of the filmmakers to achieve. It is currently not scheduled for release until, at the earliest, 2008.

I own both formats. Does that mean I will have to buy both versions of all the movies on both formats? Because, you know, being the pathetic LOTR geek that I am, I probably will... :monkey1

That's what I'll be doing. :eek:

Thank God that there isn't FIVE new disc format... who knows 5 years down the road, the name of these Ds will just get longer.. first we have DVD, now HD-DVD... maybe we have UHD-DVD (ultra high-definition DVD)...:D

Let's hope for a huge HD box set like we've seen with other series like Potter, Matrix, Spiderman, etc.

I'm in for either format. Just bring it on!

Warner just went Blu-ray exclusive. :google

It sucks for whoever invested in HD DVD -- although Warner Bros. are going to be gentlemen about this, and not cancel any HD DVD releases they've announced, unlike Paramount at the time of their switch. Their exclusivity starts around May, according to the press release.

Now, this doesn't cover New Line per se, as they're a separate company and have to issue a separate statement. But apparently the decision will span the Time Warner subsidiaries, NL among them.

There's much gloating among the Blu-ray supporters going on right now, which isn't all that savoury. Here's hoping that the LOTR Blu-ray releases, when they come, are done properly the first time around, and that the cost of the hardware necessary to view them is equal or preferably lower to that of a PF -- well, not even a PF. Too many good people have invested in a format that seemingly won't bring them the hoped-for returns, and their transition has to be as painless and possible.

There's a huge Consumer Electronics Show taking place in Vegas from Sunday, during which more will hopefully be made clear.
