Wrong. It's just not the tone you wanted for a Superman movie, or the exact same tone from he Reeve Superman. But it is correct for a Superman story. It matches the tone of several Superman stories in comics both classic and modern.
How long are the fans of MOS going to keep playing the Christopher Reeve card? It seems like the only way that you can defend your film is to knock what came before. Even Zack Snyder is doing it. That's pretty weak.
I don't know about anyone else. but I was done with CR after Superman II.
I didn't see SM III or IV in the theatre, I didn't pay to see III (my friend's Uncle taped it off cable), and I rented IV for a dollar, because of a mixture of boredom and morbid curiosity. That's it.
To be honest, CR really wasn't even MY Superman. Yes, I saw STM in the theatre when I was 11, but up till then I was watching George Reeves EVERYDAY on television. So even though I was the right age for CR doesn't mean I embraced him completely.
I liked STM, but there were things about it that I didn't. For me though, the good outweighed the bad. I still think it's a good movie, both of them. But that's where it stopped. I was over it.
I mean, it's not like I liked Superman Returns. I hated that crap. When I first heard about Singer's "idea" the first thing I thought was, "Wow, that's sounds really stupid.", and it wasn't like that film was a huge success or anything, so why would you keep thinking that the reason why anybody didn't like MOS is because they're all "wrapped up in the Chris Reeve movies". That really doesn't make any sense.
Truth be told, if Zack Snyder didn't want to be compared to Richard Donner then he shouldn't have copied him.
Did he have to use Zod for the big bad? No he didn't. He could have used Brainiac, like a lot of fans wanted. But no, he went with Zod, just like Richard Donner. The only difference is that RD was smart enough to save Zod and co. for the sequel, so audiences could get to know the main characters and care about them, not try to cram everything into one film like MOS did. Which is exactly what they did, they remade Superman I and II. The only problem was they weren't very good about it.
So for the record, this Superman fan isn't, "all hung up on the Christopher Reeve movies", I didn't like MOS for the simplest reason there is:
I thought it was a lousy movie.
