I was just getting my head round the etiqutte of Alfred's evening dress, to work out what I could use the spare one for, and discovered the difference between white tie and black tie.
White tie is for the most formal events, and is worn with a tailcoat.
Black tie is less formal and worn with a tuxedo.
A butler on duty at a white tie event would wear a tailcoat, but his bow tie would be black or grey so that he wouldn't be mistaken for a guest.
Which narrows down the use for the spare set to... butler or household staff.
This deal's getting worse all the time.
