It's a really poorly made film, with many incongruencies.

For instance, when Superman references his hologram trick at the end, he says "We use to play this game in school, never was very good at it."... uh, what school did he play this at and with whom? Makes it sound like the writers forgot he didn't go to Krypton High.

I feel that way about the first movie, but the second I don't think has aged nearly as well. The story is rushed, effects and cinematography look a lot cheaper, and Zod, Ursa and Non are not much more than cartoon villains (who don't seem particularly bright).

I still love the movie, but it's just nowhere near the level of the first.

Well... I should have prefaced what I said with the fact that I'm a bit of a simpleton. It felt like there were more bright lights and loud noises in the second one. Me like.

Weirdest thing for me is Superman somehow being completely unaware of Zod's arrival and attacks for days on end (does the Fortress not have a warning system to alert him of danger?), then deciding to give up his powers without a second thought for a woman he barely knows, and then he's barely been human for a day before he learns about Zod and immediately has to head back to the Fortress again. Lol

I'm unsubscribing. You guys are killing my love of this movie with your plot holes and logic!

Tbh, the Donner Cut has that REALLY baffling ending. Hate the repeated turn back time thing, but then beating up the guy at the diner that should no longer remember him... Nutso.
I prefer the original theatrical Lester cut to the Donner cut.

Nostalgia probably plays a large part why but I also did not like some of the cuts/story omissions made in the Donner cut.

Also, some of the Donner footage looks rough and incongruent to the rest of the film - I believe some of it was rehearsals (or auditions?) which I don’t believe were ever meant to be spliced into the final film.

I always wanted a 3rd party Reeve because would love some expressions, like smiling, angry, sidewards smile heads.

But Ursa Non and Zod....would be great.

I think that's what make great movies and superhero movies. You need over the top acting, villains and so on.

Hence everyone loves Superman 1-4 Lux Luthor Gene Hackman, Superman 2 Zod, Ursa, Non, Spiderman 2 DOC Ock...Batman Robin Riddler Two face.

Look at William Defoe Green Goblin and Norman. A LOT of his scenes are over the top and cheesy, hence it's a superhero movie and one of the best out there.

I prefer the 70's Hulk TV show becaue of the Shakespearean acting by Bill Bixby. You need to translate feelings to the audience, hence over the top acting works best imo.

I agree with most of this. But his, “working out,” comment will be legendary forever.

The reveal to Lois is much better in the Lester version.

I think the Donner Cut has a bit more of the weight and epic feel of the first movie, but I agree it's too much of a confusing mess to really enjoy.

I love over the top villains, but Zod and the others are so thinly written and nowhere near as interesting or fun to watch as Dafoe's Goblin or Nicholson's Joker. And you kinda have to take it on faith that they pose a real threat to Superman, whose been on Earth far longer and should be able to run circles around them with his powers.

Can't disagree with the comments regarding plot holes and issues with Superman 2.

Still think it's immensely fun and rewatchable in a way parts 3 and 4 are not.

You can't deny it would be a fun display to have Ursa, Non and Zod facing off against Superman.

Superman was great to see as a kid. However, Lex wasn't much of a villian. Even with its issues I like Superman II more. There was at least a semblance of a threat.

Come to think of it Superman Returns has the same kind of Lex and similar plots.
Nothing really happens in Superman: The Movie. Stupid land stuff and Otis.

I'd say there's a decent amount that happens. Superman saves Lois from falling to her death, saves Air Force One, is nearly killed by kryptonite, is forced to stop one missile while another hits California, performs several rescues (far more than we've seen in Superman movies since), watches Lois die, and then disobeys his father to turn back time and save her.

And I know people make fun of the land stuff now, but I still think it really works for the movie, and makes Lex seem cold as hell for wanting to kill millions of people just to make himself richer. It's not even about power or control so much, just good old American greed, which is kinda refreshing for a supervillain.
