I never finished after having to use a guide to get past the...
...part where you have to pixel hunt for the green goo on the ground

I'm just too pissed of at it to finish now.:banghead

So far, about the only positive thing I have to say about the game is that it looks *really* nice and the control scheme is different. I have about 3 hours logged, but I'm guessing 2 of those hours are wandering aimlessly or clicking around those dumb "I-Spy" sections.

Seriously, the one with the little rabbit thing, I clicked that thing so many times. It never registered until I got frustrated and clicked randomly all over the screen. :slap

I hear it's a short game, so I'm gonna try to tough it out.

Yeah I'm not sure what they were thinking including such parts in the game, they dial back the controls to make it more accessible and put these these parts that can have a real gamer stuck for hours if they don't resort to a guide.

Thankfully it gets better as you progress...parts reminded me of Dead Space, when it looks in on that over the shoulder view.

In the months following mycompletion of this game, I've had time to reflect upon my feelings toward Other M. Every time I think of it it makes me shake my head with disdain and a distant yearning. Makes me a bit angry too. But I don't blame Team Ninja.

Thanks for bumping the thread and allowing me to share that.

Other M was total garbage, and Nintendo and Team Ninja should feel bad about it.

If they couldn't live up to the standards the Prime series set, they shouldn't even have made the game.

I liked Other M. I'm not going to defend it, because I realize your mileage may vary, but I would play a sequel.

Only if they improved the weak points. They really need to be rid of the dialogue and fix the Samus character before anything else...and up the difficultly, it was a cake walk.

Played some more last night and I'm finally starting to enjoy it! I really liked the parts where you are running from something under a time limit, like the lava pit thing. And the boss at the end of the fire pit was great!

I also like how a lot of enemy encounters are really mini-bosses rather than just fodder that can be killed with one shot, though I wish there was more variety.

I forgot where I left off. Somewhere after the snow. Hopefully there will be more of the "intensity" that these past few sections had, and less of whatever was going on at the beginning.

Still doesn't feel very Metroid-like though. :monkey2

Oh come now, total garbage is a bit harsh...despite all it's flaws it was still fun to play for the most part.

Nope, total garbage. I can count on two fingers the times I had fun playing it. The initial rush of playing a new Metroid game and the last time I hit "quit game" before I traded it in. Everything between those two points was crap.

The more I think about it, the more I wish nintendo didn't even bother with this game. The story and the character development of Samus was just horrible.

If this is what happens when they add a personality to their flagship characters, I'd rather Nintendo keep their characters mute. God forbid they destroy a Zelda game by making Link a whiny emo.

This is what I tell all the teenagers crying for Nintendo to give their characters a voice. If anything, Other M has given me a case-in-point against them.

It's not the fact that they gave them a voice, it's the manner of it. She's totally miscast and out of character, the dialogue is atrocious and the "acting" is cardboard stiff. and awkward.

Like I stated before it's the very Japanese over the top nature turn of the series. I groan at Japanese writing. Resident Evil also has it, I popped in Darkside Chronicles on the wii and immediately the dialogue jumped out as awkward and forced, not very situational at all. But games like Uncharted just flow and feel natural. They feel like real people in those games.

I think all the blame can be levied onto Yoshio Sakamoto (creator of Metroid), who has writing and producer credits in this game. He had a heavy hand in how this game turned out, at least when it comes to the script, narrative and characterization.

He doesn't know how to flesh out a character he created two decades ago. I also agree that Other M came off as very Japanese in how It handled it's story and characters. I think it's been a big challenge for them in this generation of gaming. They just don't seem to get it, especially when they attempt to create western characters.

But when it comes to silent characters and very arthouse fantasy settings, they do very well (Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Okami).

Back to Sakamoto. Like George Lucas with Star Wars, I think he should no longer be involved creatively in the Metroid franchise.

I hope there will not be an Other M 2.

I almost jumped on this a few minutes ago when Amazon had it for $19.99, but all this talk made me nervous. Maybe I'll pick it up used down the road.

If you can get it for $20 and Gamestop buys it back for more than $20, then buy it.
