But in all fairness if he's reneged on a business deal with Landis he has no one to blame but himself. Not like Landis has a reputation for suing people left right and centre.

Somehow I just can't muster any compassion for Michael Jackson.

I feel a degree of sympathy, 'if' as the courts of law found in the past, he isn't guilty of any criminal wrong doing.
But he is so very far removed from anything even orbiting normality, one just can not empathise with him, which I think can harm him in the minds of the general public.

Then you didn't check very closely. That video and concept is what it is due to the talents of John Landis. Michael Jackson was the performing talent, but Landis is the visionary that brought it to life. He deserves his half.
I have no sympathy for Jackson, either- this isn't the first time he's been sued for not holding up his end of a bargain. He tends to like taking things from people (money, services) and then conveniently "forgets" to pay them what they are due when the time comes. He is very, very far removed from reality; he lives in a fantasy land where he just takes and takes. I liked him very much years ago, but I am very unimpressed with the misanthropic parasite he has become.
