I remember the terrible one from 1977... in Sensurround!
I saw it in the theater as well, it did have some epic star power in it though. It even had Tom Selleck before he was famous.
How could the Japanese empire withstand the combined might of Heston, Fonda, Ford, Mitchum, Coburn and Selleck?

Yeah well, the original was pretty bad, so if this is bad, but with better FX, we should be good...

Of course, lacking the Starpower of the original.

I'm in- the effects look great- all I can hope for is a good war movie

Well, that trailer tells me certainly not to expect an oscar-caliber war movie here - too flashy, too many blatant blockbuster shots and CGI. Could nevertheless be a good watch though.

I don't know. Michael Bay burned me with awesome Pearl Harbor visuals in trailers once before. And Emmerich is no better.

Certainly the opening 12 minutes will be Pearl Harbor... then a laboriously long movie about one smart guy who knows what the Japs are up to... then the climactic showdown in the Pacific at Midway which might be as long as the end of Rogue One. So there's likely close to an hour of "war movie" and probably close to two hours of "talking about it".

But if he has good characters -- like he did in The Patriot -- and something that Michael Bay was never accomplished at -- then the movie could be as entertaining as The Patriot (which I liked very much).

Michael Bay's extent of 'character development' is putting his lead in front of an American flag at some point or otherwise surrounded by primary-colors of blue-collar Americana.

The Patriot- Also one of John Williams best scores imo. Another great main theme and very rousing in much the way Raiders and Superman was.
Jason Issacs was great and like all good villains elevated Gibson’s hero. The one fault I had with it is that Gibson should’ve died at the end on the battlefield after rallying the counter attack and carrying the flag. I’d love for Dam Toys to do a Ghost/Patriot figure, they seem to pretty close already with the latest Assassins Creed offering.

Last time I watched The Patriot I found it a bit on the cheesy side, I dunno. I felt it hadn't aged well. Braveheart, on the other hand, held up strongly. Historically inaccuracy schmaccuracy.

Actually, if I remember correctly, there were a number of skirmishes/battles between the two fleets, so there should be enough material to make a truly tense movie with (almost) non-stop action.

I’m cautious at best when it comes to “historical” movies, particularly with today’s Hollywood. The minute they start injecting modern sensibilities and PC nonsense into historical films they lose all credibility.
