When we saw this my son refused to sit next to a stranger which made it hard lol. I’m constantly telling people to be quiet, put their phones away, stop kicking chairs. I don’t understand, I would have thought these people would be the ones staying home. There were two guys behind me in John Wick that were treating the cinema like their private screening room.

That's exactly what I mean. They don't deserve the cinema. Filmmakers scoff, but do they really want their work presented with that kind of audience? I wouldn't.

Same thing has happened to air travel. I truly believe it is only a matter of time before fist fights break out during showings. "Kids" will love it and post it.

The above is sad but true. I know I'll still see a few movies on the big screen here and there (the remainder of Avatar, etc.) but I think the days of me seeing 20+ films in the theater a year are behind me. For a long time I've kept a log of all the movies I see at the theater each year and in 2017 alone I saw 22 *new* releases, plus re-releases like Conan the Barbarian and what have you. I saw about half that number in 2018 with it dropping more each year (and then of course COVID in 20-21.)

To all good things I guess, I'm just glad I got to be a film lover during what are in my mind the very best decades of film and my kids got to experience stuff like the Infinity Saga, Rogue One, The Batman, No Way Home, TGM and Avatar 1 and 2 which was an awesome bonus.

Yeah after my last post I went and checked what I've seen so far this year and I'm at 7 movies for 2023 so I guess I'm still averaging one a month as well. We'll see how long it lasts.
It’s probably the exact same films. I did see D&D twice though. The only one this year. I would not have expected that at all.

Yeah that one was surprisingly entertaining.

The ones I've gone to this year are:

1. Plane
2. Jesus Revolution
3. Ant-Man Quantumania
4. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
5. John Wick 4
6. Guardians of the Galaxy 3
7. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

Plus two additional showings of Avatar: The Way of Water at the beginning of the year for 9 trips to the theater overall.

Is that normal for you or did you use to go much more than that as well.

No, I used to see tons of movies. But good ones are fewer and good theater experiences are far fewer.

I started going to alot of screenings a couple years before covid. Then, with covid, I got used to just not going to the theater... until Maverick.

I don't expect to see anything in the theater after MI7 until Dune 2. Although the wife wants to see Oppenheimer.

Me and my wife used to have a movie date every week. The Covid lockdowns broke that habit so ever since we had been watching less and less. During that period, we upgraded to a 4k OLED LG TV and subscribed to a few more streaming services.

With that in mind, it does not help that movie ticket prices have been constantly increasing making having to pay for 4 tickets (me, my wife and 2 kids) a bit more painful to stomach, especially since that would amount to a very good dinner out for our family. Watching at home with 4k HDR is great so we tend to choose what we want to watch at the theater now. Streaming the movie or renting a digital copy is now a better option in most cases.

Basically what happened to millions of people. Bad behavior coupled with middling offerings theatrically plus huge TV screens at home and a deep well of content from streaming services all helped push people to stay at home.

I don't see any indication that theaters will have a comeback or that Hollywood is really trying to get inventive to bring patrons back out. In fact, I see the opposite.

3D visors, video games, and streaming will continue to dominate the new population. When the metaverse/omniverse actually becomes a place people can go, that will likely mean the end of neighborhood theaters. People will go to virtual theaters and experience what we did in the past in their 3D meta-world.

I guess I had an ok run at the cinemas, here’s approximately 50% of just opening night…kind of read on…

That one was summer 82 if i’m not mistaken saw it in NYC.

It was WB Road Warrior not Mad Max 2.

When I say opening night i’m sure it was a year or two after Mad Max 2 was out already.

I could be wrong I’ve been punched in the head a lot of times and I drink lol

Wow even Terminator 1 opening night, damn! I remember that one completely catching everyone off guard since Arnold was far from a sure thing, no one knew who Cameron was, and it had a schlocky title that seemed to rip off Exterminator 1 and 2. You must have come out of that one absolutely blown away.

Khev the only, only, ONLY reason all of that happened was because I had TWO older brothers who dragged me along to everything! :yess:

I had an incredible childhood into adolescence into ***** adult.

I lived at the cinema it was either that or get beat up on the streets lol

I’m seriously missing like 50% :thud:

Holy crap that is freaking epic.

Your list is really taking me back.

Of course we always talk about classics like Star Wars and Indy but I also remember seeing films like Total Recall, Alien 3, and Speed opening night on absolutely massive screens with sold out auditoriums with audiences that were totally into the movies. Way before getting to pick your seat online and having to stand in a massive line for *Alien 3* and then pitying the poor souls who were stuck in the front row against the wall. People were into *everything* back then (because so much of it was so damn good.) Hell I remember seeing Se7en on opening weekend at like a matinee and *that* was sold out in a huge auditorium.
