Due to Kirkman's and McFarlane's working relationship I don't think NECA ever had a real chance at the license. Considering the history between Mcfarlane and Falk I think he just said they didn't want it to save face. I would love to hear that and the story behind NECA losing Assassins Creed to them.

Short version - Randy and Tankman both worked for McFarlane and it didn't end well. They were pretty vocal of their dislike for him for a long time after they left.
