Well I am a new daddy! Me and my wife have adopted a 12 week old female Beagle mix. We think she is mixed with a lab. What a process! We never adopted a pet and man are the thorough. We are not sure what to name her. What do you guys think? Anyways, she is already starting to take to the cats. Luckily the cats aren't nearly as upset as when they met my sisters dog. I think it is because the dog is smaller and much less hyper. Well back to the puppy!

time to puppy proof the home. No shoes on floor unless you want them chewed. get her lots of toys to chew on, or she'll find her own. Teach her which are toys, and which aren't, like shoes, curtains, furntiture legs, etc.

I wish someone told me it's not a good idea to leave a puppy alone in a confined room, because they will start scratching at either the wall or carpet/tile and damage the area.

Don't feel bad to put them in a crate when you have to leave her alone. My dogs love their crates, and think of them as a safe place. Never use the crate as a punishment.

You got your work cut out for you for the next couple of months, but pupies are so much fun.

something else I learned recently about dogs: grapes/raisins are BAD for them. I had no idea, been giving them a grape or two when I'd have some. No longer do that, overdose can be lethal. I think everyone knoes chcolate can kill a dog too (the darker the worse)

I put up a fight with my wife for about the past 8 years. She finally caved. LOL!

Oh, the problem is not the wife. She'd love one. I just don't know if I'd be able to give it the attention it needs. We're not really home-bodies. Also, I'd need to make my apartment pet-ready. Just alot to consider when getting a dog.

Awsome! Looks just like you too! :D

Dogs are great. They love you no matter what! Enjoy the new family member brother.

Congrats bro. I love dogs and miss mine terribly. Have fun with the training process and remember to reinforce good behavior.

I worked at a pet store for a couple years so let me know if you have any questions or need any advice on training.

It's funny, but as a kid, we fed our dog all kinds of food, Everything except actual dog food. We tried, but he hated it. He never got sick.

Also, stick as much DOG food as you can. There are a lot of foods that are REALLY bad for them that people don't think about. Pork and chocolate are amongtwo of the worst. You're usually ok with bef thoughif you want to giver her a treat once shes older.

when houe training don't yell at her if she goes in the house. Take her outside right after she goes and she'l start getting the idea. Rubbing their nose in it and yelling at them does not help them learn.

when I was in college, I tried to own a Beagle. Actually, my GF wanted one, but she couldn't care for it, so I got it. That thing DESTROYED the townhome we were renting. Never did get any of my $1100 pet deposit back, landlord threatened legal action when we moved. dogs get destructive when you don't get them exercised enough, which I couldn't do while completing an engineering degree. after struggling with that dog for a few months I finally had to give it away. Dogs are a huge commitment, more so than cats.

Beagles do have high energy, but maybe the part lab will chill her out some. Also have quite the bark/howl. And a great sense of smell. I finally ggave mine to The Beagle Brigade which is a rescue service for Beagles where they get trained to sniff out stuff at airports, mostly meats and plants they don't want brought in from foreign countries.

Already enjoying the pleasures of house training. LOL! I was just peed on. She awoke from a nap and I thought I was ready. I had my shoes and her leash ready. I started pulling her out of her crate and she peep before I could get her picked up. So while I was picking her up she was still peeing. LOL! This will be fun.

Update on the names. We are thinking either Maggie or Zoe.

well, it should mix well with your own pee from peeing on yourself all time when gaming :rotfl

I like Maggie of those two names.

The Last Starfighter was a GREAT movie. SO silly, but SO much fun. Like a living video game. I loved it when it first came out. "Maggs" :lol
