Agreed but still don't like them.:lol

I understand. But I have yet to see the fans of any other team that can turn an away crowd into a home crowd.

I get a laugh out of how the cowboys (notice how I don't have enough respect for them to capitalize their name?) call themselves "Americas Team". No team in the NFL has more fans at away games.

I remember chuckling at the implication of one commentator (I do not remember the game) who mentioned that a team that was beating the Steelers had quieted the Terrible Towels...at an away game. They were talking about the crowd as if it was the home crowd for the Steelers.

Now, realistically, I know that rally monkeys come out of the woodwork for the Steelers as much as they do for any other team. And that kind of sickens me. And you know who they are as soon as you start to talk to them. Their eyes glaze over and they start shivering with the terror of knowing that they are about to be exposed as posers. And I don't group the rally monkeys with new fans as I remember when I was a new fan...33 years ago.

But the Steelers have had lousy seasons as well (I know, I know, it is hard to believe:D), but I still see a lot of support for them even in the bad years. And to be honest, I think that helps, in a small way, to motivate the team to play their best. If the stands are full of team colors, no team wants to disappoint the fans. Personally, I would love to see EVERY game 50/50 with fans. But short of that, a sea of Black and Gold looks pretty impressive.

And I'll tell you, I have more respect for fans who stick with their team when their team can't seem to get very many good years than I do even for fans like me, and I consider myself to be a pretty die-hard thin-an-thick fan. I often wonder if there are any fans who stuck with the Steelers when they only had about 9 winning seasons their first 40 years as a pro team and only one playoff game. THOSE are they guys who can not be doubted as fans! You know the Rooneys love football and the team holding on to them (intermittently) for so long with so little success. There is a lot of talk about Detroit's winless season last year, but the Steelers have had 2 of those, if I remember correctly. They just had them way back 20 years or so before the merger. And I think they were only 12 game seasons, then.

And they have had a lot of success over the last 40 years or so. So it is easy to stay a fan if all you care about is wins/losses. But it goes a lot deeper than that for me. It goes in to the attitude of the team in general and how they represent their fans. And there are other teams every bit as good as the Steelers in that area...some even better...the Packers actually let their fans OWN part of the team through stocks. And it is also WHO they represent. To me, the Steelers represent a group of people who, to me, are the very core of the reason this Nation is as strong as it is. Blue collar workers like steelworkers who sweat and bleed to build this Nation.

Idealistic, I know. But it is the way I feel.

Well said.

The Steeler fanbase is so large due to not only the victories in the 70s, but also to the collapse of the American steel industry. Many steelworkers left Pittsburgh after the plants closed and moved to other parts of the country where they then set up their own little "Steeler colonies".

True story.

I want to make one more point about the fan base. Then I will leave it alone as I really do not want to start pissing people off about it.

This is specific to the Steelers/Cowboys.

I have a buddy in Phoenix who is actually a Philly fan. But he tells me that the Cowboy fans regularly crowd the Stadium when the Cowboys play the Cardinals so as to try to turn the away crowd to a home crowd. And when I was working their late last year/early this year, I actually heard on the radio that there was a campaign going on to keep the Cardinals fans from selling their tickets to Cowboys fans to keep that from happening...I believe during the playoffs.

I was told that the one of the reasons that is so easy for the Cowboys' fans is because of Tempe's relative proximity to Irving TX.

That being said...I went to the Steelers/Cowboys Superbowl in Tempe, and the fans were 2-1 Steelers fans.

Great game last night!

Speaking of those "colonies"...there is a little community on the North Side of Phoenix called "Cave Creek". There is a restaurant there called Harold'sCaveCreekCorral. They tout themselves as being "The Heinz Field of the west" and one one of the biggest Steeler Bars in the Nation.

They are all that. That is where I watched the Superbowl. It was a freakin' AWESOME experience.

This was the tent they added for the game.

This is the bar from across the street.

This was my view from my seat. The kids in front of me got kicked out, along with their mom because she was buying beer for them.

When I called to make my reservations, they told me that over 4,000 people had made reservations.

During the game, they came over the loudspeaker and said that 3800 of the reservations showed up and there were a few hundred walk-ins. So like 4,000 people at the game. About 1/4 of which were Cards fans. It was very cool and a hell of a lot of fun!

This bar has the Steeler games each week. They have a MC for the game who fills in commercials with Steelers music (the Polka and about 40 other Steelers songs). He runs around the resaurant and high fives every person if the Steelers score. It is abuncha fun.

They serve Iron City beer there and the food is very good as well!

i don't like the steelers but i respect them. if only the local fan bases around here were as working class.

If Denver gets handed a loss from the Redskins...it truly is a sign of the Apocalypse.

All kidding aside...now that Jayne Cutlet is gone I find myself actually liking the Broncos again. :D

Heck I even like the Chiefs.

But my hate for the raiturds :emperor is as strong as ever...

That's the way college football games work in most places. The home team only sells a small percentage of tickets to non-students/alumni. In part, it ensures that home crowds are always home crowds.

I don't have feelings one way or the other about DeAngelo, but no coach should be talking ???? to an athlete on the field. Seriously.

Well, except maybe that Cable guy. He'll knock a ????? out.

You know, I love a good defensive game. But the commentators playing up the defensive aspect of the Bears/49ers game tonight was more than a stretch. It was simply a poor attempt at a smokescreen.

What an inept game. I hope they both find their grooves because I like both of those teams. I also want to see Mike Singletary excel as a head coach.
