Why not, someone has to be in charge. It's called contingency planning.

They will be on the field for tonight's game between Cleveland-Baltimore.

As mfoga pointed out, you can thank Ed Hochuli for that.

Seattle and Baltimore are probably upset because they could go to the Super Bowl if the refs keep blowing those huge calls, like those two in their favor this past week.

And I love how every article about this topic has a pic of Ed Hoculi. Pretty bad when he's a bigger household name in the NFL than over 75% of the players. I'm getting an Ed Hoculi officiating jersey.

Well, as much crap as Hochuli gets, he deserves credit for having the regular officials ready enough to officiate a game on such short notice.

Every Tuesday night, the veteran official with the Popeye arms has been holding rules-related conference calls with all officials. Average attendance on the calls, I'm told, is between 90 and 110 per week. Hochuli, the officiating sources says, gives all officials a test each week, similar to one they might get from the NFL during a regular week of preparations, and then goes over the results on the phone with the officials.

"That's one of the reasons why the officials will be up to date and ready to go,'' the officiating source said. "Ed grabbed the bull by the horns and made sure that whenever this thing ended, the regular officials would be ready to go back to work immediately.''

As for the NBA thing, I made that initial comment - but it was not directed at longstanding members of this thread (you two know who you are). Yeah we have our dust ups every now and then, but we're civil about it. There was a new poster who was rocking the boat, and even posted a video to try to get a rise out of others...a tactic that is used WAY too often in the NBA thread.

The Browns have had a tough run since coming back to the league in 1999. They are 68-143 with one playoff loss in '02 since returning. Too bad, they have some of the most passionate fans in the NFL.

I personally like Hochuli. No one is perfect. I remember the real bad call he had. He almost quit. If he was like "whatever" then that would be one thing. The guy made a mistake and was man enough to come out and admit it. I can appreciate that kind of honesty which is few and far between IMO.
