You got a point there with you oneliner, but tell that to all the nuns and priests that have decided to keep their virginity to honour their religion. It's a conviction, a personal decision they made. I don't understand it, but at least I respect it.

LOL. Ok let me put it this way.

Collecting toys but not opening them is like having foreplay but passing on intercourse.

Nuns and priest should be skipping it altogether.

If you're a nun or priest in the collectible sense you wouldn't even be looking at the mechandise! :lol

For 90% of collectibles, if your goal is to display not now, but in 20 years I think it makes most sense not to buy the items now at all.

Taking SSC SW figures as a small example, you can probably nab the whole collection for about 60% of the retail cost and I'm betting 5-10 years from now it will be closer to 25% cost.

You are probably right!!! If you manage to track all of these items down, in about 20 years that is. I highly doubt that.
On the other hand, in 20 years from now, about 60% (or more) don't give a ^^^^ about this hobby anymore...

:lol Who would have thought a thread about opening a box would turn sexual :lol

And food for thought, sometimes a figure is sealed in a box, but then you open it up only to find that the f@ckors broken?!? At least when you open figures you know whats what in terms of condition.

Your mind is very clear ProgMatinee! I like that! And I certainly agree with your statement:

...Collecting toys but not opening them is like having foreplay but passing on intercourse. ...

YES! Ain't that the most perfect way of enjoying them infinitely? Think about it...

People that keep 1/6 figures boxed don't make any sense to me.
I don't know... I'm just happy that people like that can give me the opportunity to buy something I missed out at the time, in an new, untouched state. New you know, not second hand, used, but new!

We are all thinking SSC, HT and Medicom here, but, think about cool collectibles that are sold out for yeas and years... like stuff you remember from you childhood. Perhaps it doesn't bother you to find such a collectible in a used state, would you be looking for one, but wouldn't you prefer it to be factory new? What ever, these things are made to be handled, played with, etc.. But new is new :D, and in the end it comes down to a preference. So I think we have to live with that: some open their boxes, others don't.

^It's just a different way of collecting. I don't judge people that open the box and you shouldn't judge people that keep it closed. I like being able to say that I have a rare and collectible figure that hasn't even been opened or played with.

You've just got to get them out, if you just want them as an investment there are far more 'stable' things to invest in.
Release them from their cardboard sarcophagi and let them feel the sun on their small plastic faces, not for too long in the sun though, it can cause bleaching!

There's a reason the MOC mentality still prevails in the action figure circles, and not in the high end circles. When you're putting down hundreds and thousands of dollars into collectibles which are more art than toys, you have to be a little more serious about these things. I don't see a lot of people sending off their 1:1 busts and PFs to AFA for grading.

But when you're collecting cheap stuff, it's easier to afford multiples. This sort of abundance allows people to branch out into different styles of collecting.

Frankly I think that is where much of the MIB mentality comes from. People think back to the toys they had as kids. They think about how a toy that's now valuable got broken or thrown away or lost, and they wish they had kept it fresh in the box or on the card. I know I've entertained fantasies of going back in time and buying up a bunch of Star Wars toys fresh off the store shelves.

But how much fun do you think you would have had as a kid if you had kept all of your toys in the box or on the card? Not much, and you would never have those fond memories about them in the first place. And I don't think you're getting the most out of your 1/6th scale figures in the box either.

Also, with something like these that are specifically sold as "collecitibles" you get many more left MISB hoping to turn a profit in the future. However, since more people do that you end up with lots of MISB items and sellers still get a good deal... you just held the collectible for 20 years :lol

The reason a carded 12-Back Vader is worth so much is most kids in the 70's ripped into that ^^^^ within seconds of getting their greasy paws on them. Not like there were a lot of 30 year old collectors back then clamshelling their figures :lol

Based on most peoples response to this thread, I don't think too many people keep them MISB. These items will still have a greater value then an opened one.

The thing is, with Sideshow packaging you often can't really even tell if a figure has been opened. These aren't like some things that you have to rip apart to open. Back when I was buying the Sideshow figures from the Star Wars line that I missed, I didn't see much difference in auction price whether the figure was opened or not (they were all pretty low). But I did hear some people complain about how stupid they were to buy multiples of the same figure to keep MIB. :lol

Oh, don't use us to guage the rest of collectordom... we are but a small and decidely inbred group :lol

If I were you, I'd enjoy your figures and not worry about what they'll be worth later. As long as you keep them in a clean enviroment and keep all the packaging, if you do decide to sell, you'll still should get a good price for it. Besides, a collectible is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay. I have some things packed away mint that I couldn't give away at the moment.
