What did you guys think of the Oscar nominations this year?

Any movies or performances that you loved get skipped over?

Looks like Little Miss Sunshine did pretty well.

I wonder if Clint Eastwood is going to steal Martin Scorsese's Oscar again?

And Ryan Gosling Best Actor for Half Nelson?!? What? Who?

"Academy Award Nominee" Eddie Murphy?!? Didn't they see Pluto Nash?!?

Now I am really upset that Letters From Iwo Jima didn't come to any theaters near me. Or Pan's Labyrinth.

Well, POTC will definitely win the Visual Effects Oscar. I think Apocalypto should have gotten nominated for more than just the makeup stuff, maybe like cinematography. But it's actually pretty good this year. Unlike the extremely screwed up one from 2005.

And how did Borat get a Best ADAPTED Screenplay nomination?

I missed the part where it was "based on the novel by Jane Austen."

Could it be ADAPTED because it was adapter from The Ali G Show ????

Don't know if you live in Southern California, but like 8 or 9 theater by me have Pans playing

I'm pulling for Scorsese and The Departed all the way. I really hope this is his year.

I also hope An Inconvenient Truth wins Best Documentary.

I didn't see Half Nelson, but I do remember reading reviews and people saying that Ryan Gosling's performance was Oscar worthy.

What I want to know is, who is Jackie Earle Haley? I've never heard of him or Little Children.

Edit: I just looked him up on IMDB. It looks like his biggest roles were in the Bad News Bears movies and Maniac Cop 3!

If you have seen Bad News Bears (the original, not the remake) Jackie Earle Haley was the toughguy pitcher who smoked and rode the motorcycle. I also saw him in Breaking Away back in the day. He slipped out of features b/c he was a child actor who could not get any roles but has recently made a comeback with the help of his buddy, Sean Penn. Pen got him his first ral role in years in All the King's Men. He is actually very good in Little Chidren. It is a thought provoking role of a pedophile released from prison and trying to readjust to life as an ex-con surrounded by temptation. Creepy stuff sometimes. Well acted by Jackie Earle Haley. He could actually win.

Once you mentioned that, I knew exactly who you were talking about. I remember him from Breaking Away too. Looking at his photos on IMBD, he looks pretty much the same. He's just bald and has facial hair now.

Hopefully, with the Oscar nod, we'll hear more about him and Little Children.

In my opinion Marty doesn't deserve the Oscar for the Departed. The direction had no originality from the original movie that was out just 3 years ago, hell even some of the scenes were shot identical to the original. I feel that if he wins it's to make up for not having won it yet. The acting was great, but definitely doesn't deserve the Oscar for the best movie or direction. It wasn't nearly as good as the original.

I hope so. It is kind of fascinating that an actor could conceivably have a second chance at a career after a 20+ year hiatus. I know he has been working (crap or TV roles) but with this recognition and his excellent performance, he could suddenly be a recognizable name again.

I remember reading an article about Jackie Earle Haley a few months ago in my local newspaper, since he lives in San Antonio. I have been meaning to see Little Children but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I live in Central California and it's not playing anywhere within an hour's drive. I just might take the day off and make a long drive to see Iwo Jima and Pan's Labyrinth, since neither one came to my area. (I once drove three hours to see "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," so it wouldn't be the first time I make a long drive to see a foreign language film.)

If he wins, it won't really be for The Departed, but for all the other movies he has made. He has never won an Oscar and it's just his turn.

It is a TRAVESTY that Sacha Baron Cohen did not get nominated for Best Actor for Borat!

He lived and breathed that character 24/7 practically, even when the cameras were NOT rolling.

I spit on the Academy for that! :slap

Obviously they are all from Uzbekistan!

I think it's really cool that Peter O'Toole got nominated. After seeing Johnny Depp nominated for a comedic performance recently (and with Meryl Streep in for a comedy this year), I would have happily replaced Leonardo or Ryan Gosling with Sacha Baron Cohen.

If nothing else, I would have loved to have seen his acceptance speech.

I agree, he might actually "win" an Oscar this time. Whitaker seems like a lock in this category though.

Actually, it is also up for sound mixing and sound editing.

So three nominations for a Mel Gibson film is three more than I was expecting from the Academy this year!!!

:rotfl :rotfl :rotfl :rotfl Damn them !!!!!

Sascha's acceptance speech at the Golden Globes was hilarious. I'm not surprised that he wasn't nominated for an Oscar though.

And I guess best adapted screenplay was appropriate since they don't have a category for "best semi-reality, unscripted."

Its pretty sad when I havn't seen ANY of those movies... I need to get away from the computer more often.
