I would like to fully endorse this list.
That's it really. IMO "Tony Montana" was more iconic than Michael Corleone but not because of what you mentioned. It was legendary and IMO the best performance played by any actor in any film. Iconic Pacino at it's very best.
Still I would be lying if I said it wasn't more iconic because of how widely familiar people are with it.
Scarface? Best performance?!!! Has anyone even seen Serpico? Scarface is the most over-the-top, over-rated character. The only reason more people know him is due in big part to MTV's Cribs. Show me one rapper who didn't have a poster of Scarface in house and the damn movie playing on in 200" plasma screen. Geez!
Eric
So which one is it? You hate the movie or rappers? Your post is very confusing. I could care less what some lame rapper chooses to rape as a theme for their image. Pacino was brilliant in Serpico but it wasn't "iconic"
I would love a Micheal to stand behind Corleone on his base, that would look badass.
Seriously? Which Pacino role is more iconic than Michael Corleone?
1.Serpico
2.Scarface
3.Heat
4.Carlito's way5.Godfather part 1
Let me just start this post off by stating that for 20 years now Al Pacino has been my favorite actor. There are some that come close (Deniro, Nicholson) but he holds #1 in my books. Always will.
I just wanted to reply to what you said about critics "hating" Scarface. Brian DePalma mentions in the bonus footage of Scarface that the very same critics that bashed it (for no other than political lacky b.s.) now praise the film as one of the best ever gangster films made.
Now with all that being said, "I" enjoyed Pacino's performance in both Serpico and Godfather (1&2) moreso than in Scarface BUT the question at hand is not performance but rather which one is more "Iconic"
Scarface has many weaknesses but Pacino's performance was nothing short of legendary and pure method.
Okay I can agree and respect what you say about the dorks that hijacked both the movie and character. BUT it doesn't or shouldn't take away from his intense and memorable performance. It was pure method.
Now you also mentioned that Cuban's were not impressed with his performance. Did you know that Pacino hung out with the director of photography (Cuban born) John A. Alonzo? He asked him to help him find his character and he helped Pacino.
So what is fact about the movie? Critics blow and todays pathetic gangster wannabe kids shouldn't discredit an "iconic" film.
Sonny is the one who would actually look appropriate in this position, and unlike Michael it's within the realm of possibility because James Caan was OK with licensing his likeness for the game even when Pacino wasn't.
