Plasma or LCD

This was a problem that I wrestled with at the beginning of the year after my brother purchased a Pioneer 42" Plasma. He hooked up his TV to a HD box through Comcast and the picture was breathtaking. We were watching American Chopper in HD and I made a decision that I definately needed to pick up a new television. I felt like my Sony 32" Trinitron was obsolete after seeing my bro's new TV.

So I did some investigating and price comparing between the 3 (DLP, Plasma, & LCD) and I ultimately chose LCD. I managed to pickup a 50" Sony LCD (with stand) at a fair price at the time ($1700). I hooked it up through my own cable provider (Cox Communications) for HD and the rest was history.

I really enjoy my LCD but like anybody will tell you...it's more of a preference thing. My advice is to do some research...there are some really good buys out there (whether it's DLP, Plasma, and LCD) and I've seen prices dropping on alot of the older models to make way for newer ones. I helped a buddy of mine pick up a 61" Sony LCD (with stand) on sale a few weeks back for around $1400 and it's every bit as good as the model that I bought early last year.

Where did you find such nice deals?

Bodie, Samsung's and Mitsubishi's make some of the best DLP's out there. It's definately a decent price compared to what they were at during the summer. Also, check out your area to see if you have any Sams Clubs around your area. They usually have some great buys on TV's that you are looking for. That 61" Sony LCD that I was talking about earlier was purchased at a Sams Club for around the same price as that 46" Samsung DLP...

I've been doing a lot of research lately and I'd agree that front projection 1080p would be the way I'd go if I had a house with a large space. But living in a apartment it's just not feasible. But I wanted 1080p, which is cost prohibitive for plasma and I wanted at least a 55" screen. So rear projection it is for me - not DLP, but LcoS like Sony and JVC's RP sets.

Check out avsforum.com for a lot of discussion on the matter.

I had the same dilemma about 15 months ago...LCD or Plasma...I finally went for neither, and got a DLP projector...I just have it projecting onto my lounge room wall, and, even without a proper screen...It's AWESOME!

The only drawback, is just like in a cinema, it works best in total/near darkness. I still have a 80cm TV that I watch "normal" TV on though. The bulb lasts about 2500-3000 hours, I have had it for 15 months, and it is at 520 hours, so it should last at least another 3-4 years, and at only $500AUD a bulb, that's not too bad...
