Yeah, thats a close one.

Star Wars was a big part of my childhood as well. I remember my Dad giving me a buck or 2, going to 7-11 to get some cards, and sitting out front eating that pink cardboard gum, sippin' a slurpee, checkin out my new cards!
I had all the toys.....well, not all - but lots. And still love SW to this day.

But when the LOTR films came out, I fell in love with them! Read all the books 3-4 times, but I love the movies as well. I aint a hater. I love them both!
It was exciting to have something again to love! It had been such a long time.

SW is great, and iconic, and classic, and lots of things. But, to me, its not as rich, moving, and epic as LOTR.

So, at the end of the day, I have to hang my hat in the South Farthing, and go with LOTR!

Taking into account special fx from 30 years ago vs today's cgi I still think LOTR gives a stronger media experience.

If we are only talking special effects...

It's interesting. I was taking screen captures of ESB and ROTS. While watching excerpts of both SW movies, it stood out to me how realistic the matte paintings, model miniatures, and practical sets looked in ESB compared to the mostly computer drawn scenery in ROTS.

I'm sure all the old techniques took a lot more time, man power, and limited what scenery could be achieved. But look how the OT has stood the test of time. Here, in 2007, I am freeze framing a 30-year-old movie, and still not quite being able to distinguish what is a model vs a practical set piece vs a matte painting. And yet, when I watch ROTS, the backgrounds resemble the latest CG movie from Pixar. Computer graphics are not bad. I love animated films. But when it's integrated with live action, I think it still needs to be kept to a minimum.

I went with LOTR. I just think overall everything in LOTR was done a touch better than in SW. Both are totally awesome.

This is what happens when you try to post and talk on the phone 2 a buddy about giving him his SW SDCC items. :lol

Love the original SW, but have to go with LOTR. First, I considered the available tech. of each time period. Second, how the quality of it is on a Lucas film and how he uses it. I could kind of guess how destructive it could be in the OT. We've already seen examples of it. After seeing the PT and OT upgrading, it can easily be seen that the OT would have been horrible if Lucas had had all of that technology at his disposal. So, I think the modern technology argument is nulified.

The mix of storytelling (with chararcter developement), quality matte and CGI, use of miniatures/bigatures, and location shooting is far superior in LOTR. Lucas's vision of a computer can do it all falls way short. I just don't think that Lucas would have considered to build the shire on location, build Rohan, build major parts of Helm's deep or Minas Tirith. It would have all been done on a computer.

I know it's kind of an apples and oranges view of earth vs. space, but I still think LOTR captures the epic sense of the films better than SW.

Dang its a tight contest!
Its really hard to choose. LOTR are far better films and just classics in their own right, that built and adapted Tolkiens work so beautifully. However OT SW are just the original Sci-Fi classics, in which many childhoods were brought up with.
Still, has to go to LOTR for me.

Wow I just tipped it over to LOTR, I absolutely love the SW trilogy, and they've had a bigger influence on my life, but for quality of end product Jackson just pips Lucas at the post for me.
:chew:emperor Dance Wookie, dance ha, ha, ha!
