Re: Quantum Mechanix 1/6 Star Trek The Original Series Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy

PO'd this earlier from SSC for $23 using RP. It's the regular version, but I don't plan on using the tunic, anyway. I don't like how the elbow joints are visible with it and prefer he be in his long sleeved shirt with the rank ribbons, like the others.

So many whiners! Neck is too thick, elbows joints too visible, looks too old, too many wrinkles or not enough, tunic looks bad, etc. I'd swear I was on a Star Wars Hot Toys thread!

Look at Sideshow's photos that are in much higher resolution, I've never seen a McCoy figure that looks so much like him! You wanna go back to Playmates? I collect Hot Toys and am very fine with this. He's gonna look awesome in hand. Hope QMX and Nanjin don't look at this thread much or else we'll never see Scotty.

I don't personally agree with most of the criticisms raised so far (other than the 'lumpy' sculpt issue, which was also present with Spock, and the arms are a fair point - just not something that bothers me when I had no plans to remove the regular uniform anyway), but folks are free to state their honest views, and should always be, whether one agrees with them or not. These are not cheap items, and it is a very competitive market out there these days, so anytime you launch anything you are going to get a wide range of views, from both potential customers and armchair critics, that's just how it works. So long as people aren't being abusive, such discussions and views should be taken for exactly what they are, a bunch of random personal views and opinions, of all shapes and sizes and perspectives, nothing more, nothing less, which can be paid attention to, or not, at one's leisure.

And at the end of the day, the only opinion that really matters is one's own, and whether they themselves rate something worth parting with their own cash dollars for. Whether their opinion happens to be part of the minority or the majority is largely irrelevant to any collector collecting to their own tastes and wants. Or I'd argue should be, anyway. Everything else is just idle chit chat and (hopefully) interesting discussion to pass the time with. Nothing worth getting too wound up about.

Besides, whining about 'whiners' just makes you, by definition, just another whiner, doesn't it? :p ;)

Anyway, pre-ordered my McCoy already, so now the wait begins...

Re: Quantum Mechanix 1/6 Star Trek The Original Series Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy

I think he looks fantastic, personally. I agree some better arms would be nicer, but I don't think they're all that bad. a bit of paint might just do the trick. I think the headsculpt looks spot on, no complaints there at all. Can't wait to get him in hand.

In some way yes I suppose, but after looking at this: star-trek-dr-leonard-bones-mccoy-sixth-scale-qmx.jpg

I can't see why we have so many negative comments here. I feel like he's the best of the 3 so far.

Maybe it helps that I was able to order him from Sideshow at just $35! (With $145 in RP!)

Rarely on this site does a product please everyone.

Re: Quantum Mechanix 1/6 Star Trek The Original Series Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy

Exactly. It's always subjective. People have different opinions - that's the point of a forum.

Now that Pix pointed it out, I can see the thick neck in the photo above :lol

An opinion that tries to shut someone else's down and prevent them from speaking should be kept to oneself (in other words, shut yourself down first).

The neck on the current prototype is monstrously thick like a WWE wrestler and not remotely similar to the source material. That's not an opinion, that's just a fact. I'm going to take the time to write to QMx about it,not just post in here.

Maybe it's just me, but it looks like it's just that one pic that's really monstrous. I'll admit, it does look big in that pic. But also, look at the tricorder strap - it's holding down the collar. I have this sneaking suspicion that it's fine, it's just that picture. But there's no way to know for sure until it comes out.

I doubt there's anything QMX can do to change it at this point, though, regardless.

Re: Quantum Mechanix 1/6 Star Trek The Original Series Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy

Well the necks on Kirk and Spock were pretty thick too, so at least they're being consistent.

Re: Quantum Mechanix 1/6 Star Trek The Original Series Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy

Overall the figures fine. I'm just not feeling the tunic and I really wanted to use it. Other than that there are a lot of really nice figures coming out and I'm not so sure those won't get my attention first. If Kirk and Spock haven't sold out I think I can wait on McCoy.

Re: Quantum Mechanix 1/6 Star Trek The Original Series Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy

So many whiners!
Don't read then. :lol

The only objective criticism so far is that the sculpt could be more realistic and that sleeveless shirt is an odd exclusive considerin' plain plasticky arms. The sculpt is very nice and looks spot on despite havin' some features exaggerated a bit - it's much better than their Spock who looks like a straight caricature of Nimoy. In the end it's all about the exclusive shirt, which (in my opinion) should've been part of the regular set instead.

Re: Quantum Mechanix 1/6 Star Trek The Original Series Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy

Looking at the pics so far of the head sculpt I think it's has a very strong resemblance, but I feel the sculpt detail especially the furrows of the wrinkles especially the bags under his eyes are a bit too harsh and too deep. That detail could soften while going through production and hopefully the sculpt will be cast in a more transparent color because it looks very opaque to me, that would help the sculpt to look more lifelike and accurate. It says in the pictures that this is a prototype so hopefully the head sculpt will look better after production.
I'd be more inclined to get the exclusive if the bare arms looked better, but I can only display him in one outfit so I'll likely just pick up the regular once I see pictures of it in hand and my issues with the sculpt are alleviated.

Re: Quantum Mechanix 1/6 Star Trek The Original Series Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy

AFAIK, apart from Kirk, the other sculpts we've seen of this series were all done by the same sculptor.

Pretty sure I wouldn't have PO'd it if I wasn't fine with it and overall didn't like the figure? :dunno

:exactly:

Even then, I think the Spock sculpt actually looks much better in hand than it comes across in photos. I think the McCoy sculpt looks better in photos than the Spock sculpt does in photos, so I'm sure the McCoy sculpt will look even better in hand also.

Re: Quantum Mechanix 1/6 Star Trek The Original Series Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy

Yeah I agree this sculpt seems to be a bit stronger than the Spock, and more immediately recognizable as the actor. And like with Spock, as long as you don't put him directly under a light which would bring out the lumpy features too much, it should still look pretty cool on the shelf.

Re: Quantum Mechanix 1/6 Star Trek The Original Series Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy

We can always bead-blast him and then pay $200 for a nice repaint and $20-50 for a body.

Re: Quantum Mechanix 1/6 Star Trek The Original Series Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy

Just a note about the scrub top: I agree it looks bad with stock body, but QMx body is interchangeable with hot toys, so changing the body is an option. Does anyone know when it goes up for preorder on the QMx site?
