If you're an OT guy, begin at the beginning... Timothy Zahn's "Thrawn Trilogy" (Heir To The Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command). Those three set up a ton of what happens throughout all the other post-OT books. Plus, the vast majority of readers that I know of think they're some of the best EU as well.

I agree, defiantly start with the Zahn books. Also there are some books from the 70's and early, 80's that are really good like Brian Daley's Han Solo books and a few other writers books that take place before or during the original trilogy.

Han Solo at Stars End - 1979 Brian Daley

Han Solo and the Lost Legacy - 1980 Brian Daley

Lando Calrissian and the Star Cave of Thonbaka - 1983 L. Neil Smith, Lando still owned the Falcon in the series

Splinter of the Minds Eye - 1978 Alan Dean Foster

Just of a few of the old book I can think of at the moment, but I think theres about 5 other Lando books, and 1 more Han Solo book. Splinter of the Minds Eye is the first EU book ever writen and takes place right after ANH, and the story revolves around Luke, Leia and Darth Vader for the most part.

Thanks a lot everyone, I can already see I will be reading a lot of these - not sure why I never got into them. I am going to start with the Thrawn books as many have suggested (so I can justify having ordered him without knowing who the hell he is ;-).The Tales at Jabba's Palace, Bounty Hunters and Mos Eisley all sound very interesting as well as the Republic Commandos and Truce at Bakura book for picking up where ROTJ ended. I wish other film makers could create some of these as movies so we migth see some non Lucas light saber goodness, but I don't see that ever happening so it's time to hit the paper. Thanks again to everyone and keep the recommendations coming - Amazon prime is a wonderful thing, now I just need to clear some shelf space amongst the 1/6 collection...

Yeah, i'd definately go with Timothy Zahn's "Thrawn" Trilogy. If you enjoy it, take it from there. For me, It's where the modern EU started.

I was just about to order the Thrawn trilogy new on Amazon when I decided to check eBay for any used collections and I did indeed find several. I ended up getting a large paperback collection that included the Thrawn books so I am psyched to start these up. Quick question for you all: do any of them go into Plo Koon's story at all? I was thinking Order 66 would but upon reading reviews, it does not look that way. I have always liked him, but the only thing I really know is that he ate it flying his craft when 66 went down.

I'm not aware of any books that went into Plo's story. I always love to read about some of the background characters taking lead in some of the stories.

~~Ebay is the best place to find used books. Also check some mom and pop used bookstores if you're not picky about getting them in mint condition. I found a bunch of them for $.25 a few years ago, but they were a little rough looking.

the dark empire graphic novel was also quite good, if you can't find a copy, (evilbay should have it cheap if nowhere else), the audio books not a bad way to kill a long comute somewhere.

this is fantastic, as it includes not only the novels, but the comics and reference material as well.

Yep and the person that put it together is the most knowledgeable person I've ever talked to on Star Wars Lit.

neet. I've been a walking encyclepedia myself for a while, but i stopped reading them before vector prime came out. just finished the dark nest trilogy, recently, getting caught up, i need to go back through all the older stuff.

been listening to audibooks at work lately.

I read Dark Lord: Rise of Darth Vader and Darth Bane: Path of Destruction last week; I started Rule of Two last night but am having a hard time getting into it.

Stick with Rule of Two, it's worth it...
