Wow! Big Hellboy fan?? Fan of the comics or just the films? Personally I like 2 much better. Something about 1 just never clicked with me.
Huge Helllboy fan. Both of the comics and the films. I enjoyed both movies, but the first one is much truer to the source material and I think overall is just a stronger representation of Hellboy and the world he lives in. It feels like a more rounded and focused film. The color palate is more striking, the musical score is more powerful, and I much prefer nearly every creative element it employs. The ending shot is still one of the most beautiful images ever committed to film, in my opinion of course.
Hellboy 2 was also great, with some incredible creatures and improved action, but I found it a little too silly and unfocused. Not to mention it radically departs from the comics and really feels more like it belongs to the world of Pan's Labyrinth, rather than Hellboy. When I spoke with Hellboy creator Mike Mignola a number of years back, he more or less agreed, and admitted he was less than thrilled with the second film, himself. That movie is entirely Guillermo del Toro's vision, and strays from the original universe quite a bit. I do still love it though, and I believe Mignola has warmed to it since then as well.
1 has the better plot and villains imo, but 2 was more well made, seemed like it had a bigger budget, better effects. 2 has some cornball cheese that really hurts it but it's slightly better than the first overall.
The original has the plot and villains from the original miniseries- Hellboy: Seed of Destruction. The second film's baddies and plot were all entirely made up and not from the comics whatsoever. I agree that the cornball cheese hurts the second film. I'm just less forgiving of it than most.
That is how I feel about Blade. I just love the story of the first film and the gritty reality feel. However the second had a better budget and the action scenes were top notch...however Blade 1 has the Bloodbath opening which is as good as anything in comic movies.
Blade 2 is also directed by Guillermo del Toro. Best of the Blade series, for my money.
