ANYTHING can be made to be dark(Edit - The trick is to get a writer/director/actor group that can translate it well). There are other movies that have been given that treatment that were surprising.

I like the current FF movies and cast very much, but I will love to see a FF movie with a darker presentation to it just as much.

yes, anything can be made dark. IF it's original material. if u are basing it on something that has an established tone and manner, then changing it for the sake of changing it is not just disrespectful of the source, but it's simply unnecessary. there's no need whatsoever to make the fantastc four "dark". the comics worked just fine as a good-natured, positive superhero property. and making it brooding and gritty in the movies wouldn't necessarily make the f4 more "believable". good writing, good directing and good actors are what makes comic book characters believable and engaging.

the existing f4 movies had ONE out of 3 elements. the actors were fine (except jessica alba but she's so hot i don't care if she's unconvincing as invisible woman).

and i agree that chris evans is great. i actually liked his human torch. he was just the right amount of cocky and funny that the character required. chiklis as the thing was a good choice too.

What? Disrespectful of the source? It's a comic book being made into a movie. It is not some relevant person's biography. I certainly don't take it THAT seriously. To me, it is OK for a story to be told in different ways. To me, it is even OK to change facts in a true story to make it more interesting if it is intended as entertainment and not education.

Necessary? What movie is "necessary"? It is entertainment. Nothing more. It does not matter if it is "respectful to the source material" or "necessary" all that matters is that enough people find it fun and pay money for it to justify the cost of making it. Hell, I would go see the musical, **** version fantastic Four if they made it so long as it was entertaining.

Let's do the Marvel Zombies storyline!!!

Seriously though, no more killer clouds please...and the Silver Surfer was a depressing wuss...

Why doesn't Marvel Studios get the damn thing going??? Lousy Fox...

I really wish Marvel could purchase back all the movie rights. A Civil War movie series is just so tempting.

The Fantastic Four were never dark, they were beacons of hope and if they are looking at Iron Man as "dark" then we have nothing to fear because at best Iron Man was "dim". The thing about Fantastic Four is they were beacons of hope especially Reed who believed everything had a scientific explanation, Sue who believed that the four of them could conquer everything or Johnny who believes that he can conquer anything. The darkest member would have been Ben who feels alienated from society due to his look.

Reed and Sue were completely miscasted, never bought them in their roles for a minute. Chris Evans wasn't exactly the Johnny Storm I wanted (attempted to be too funny and not enough cocky) but passable and Ben was perfectly casted. I hated Julian McMahon as Victor though more than all of them. He had no regality for a second.

The FF are supposed to be fun, lighthearted dealing with darker situations like Skrulls and interplanetary delights but not to the point of being cheesy or even a two hour pun. Ben needs to be bigger, I have no problem with the suit but he needs to be much bigger, much wider. No reason why they couldn't get a tall bodybuilder into the suit and have the actor playing Ben voice over ala Abe Sapien or Darth Vader.

By no means does the Fantastic Four need to be The Dark Knight.

I would love it, and then of course Planet Hulk .... they could bag WWH though, or at least re-imagine it. :monkey1

when i said disrespectful and necessary, i meant that if you're going to adapt something, u should at least stay true to the spirit of the source material. i don't hold the comics up as any kind of revered holy scripture. but why bother basing it on an original source with a particular identity that is fairly well-known if you're going to change the essence of its characters and overall tonality? to me, that simply reeks of changing it for the sake of changing it. and i'm pretty sure fox is doing it because they saw the results of "the dark knight", not grasping the fact that tdk was simply staying true to its source. in that context it is "unnecessary".

and u answered my point yourself: u said what matters in an f4 movie is that "people find it fun". that was EXACTLY the tonality of the comics, lighthearted, hopeful, positive and FUN. not dark, brooding and angsty. i think the mike summed it up pretty well. :)
