Is Batman old in that book?

in dkr? absolutely, bruce is in 50's. not that that's old....but he always references being slower, softer, and how all the new faces on the street are less than half his age. he also has white hair and a mustache to start. i also can't explain why but in certain panels bruce wayne, to me anyways, looks like marlon brando, face wise.

My recommendations:
The Killing Joke
The Long Halloween
Dark Victory
Hush
Super & Bats Public Enemies
The Dark Knight Returns
Year One
The Man Who Laughs

There have been a lot of great suggestions made and there are a lot of great Batman stories. We had a friend who loved Batman but had only ever seen the Animated Series. We suggested he read, in order:

Year One
The Long Halloween
Dark Victory
The Killing Joke
Hush
The Dark Knight Returns

Just my recommendation. The Neal Adams stuff is also great.

My recommendations / favourites:
Year One
The Long Halloween
Dark victory
The Killing Joke
Broken City
Batman: Terror
Hush
and most recently the controversial Joker graphic novel

love the knightfall series (book 1, book 2, knightsend) - a really classic batman story. and also another reason to hate schumacher. he turned one of batman's greatest adversaries into a dumb goon.

long halloween, year one, hush, killing joke, a death in the family all great. i recently read the whole no man's land saga - and although it starts of crappy it ends seriously well. also just finished batman r.i.p. - not sure i liked it, but it's definitely interesting. i learnt a little more about bruce wayne.

if i was to recommend one, i'd start with knightfall.

^ Yeah Knightfall is a great read too! I forgot that on my list...
The older stories are definitely the better ones in my opinion, such as Year One and Long Halloween. Most of the recent GNs just don't seem to capture the same spirit as those stories, but then I've always preferred the stories where Batman works solo.
Not sure I'm going to be a fan of the new era of DC Comics Batman :-(

One of the most awesome and memorable panels is when he wakes up sans the mustache!!

My recommendation:

The Killing Joke,
The Long Halloween,
The Dark Knight Returns
The Cult (great to see how Batman is spiritually broken in this one)

That's freaky, I just came into this thread to recommend that Joker graphic novel. It's pretty sick and twisted but the story is good. Like Mikey2Bullets said, keep in mind that it was made before TDK because otherwise there are some plot elements that seem ripped from the movie.

does he wear make up?

I liked Joker, but I have to say, it's one of the only Joker stories that has made me feel uneasy, or a bit sickened with the character

I liked it too. What I didn't particularly like though was the handling of the other villains like Two Face & Penguin... But, you could always argue that the story was written through the eyes of Jonny Frost - so his accounts of the story and characters could be exaggerated or complete fantasy....

i just bought the long halloween from the book shop, so I can settle down tonight and have a good read.
