Another Titan that is gone. The man was brilliant in pretty much everything I saw him in.

Quick and the Dead was quintessential Hackman for me -- he had that sparkle in his eye even while being threatening, smug, charming, dangerous, and humorous.

Unforgiven is likely my favorite film starring Gene. Favorite western as well.

Really? I would've imagined millennial writers rooms being all "supportive", you know, participation trophies and all.

Normally one of two outcomes in my experience when giving them input/constructive criticism:

They yell you down
They start crying

Amazing level of maturity, social awareness, and life experience.... NOT! Too many years of participation awards and not being told what their real strengths and weaknesses are.

Story checks out. I have to be pretty careful in terms of how I communicate with them. I'm not this old school, "suck it up" guy who yells or disrespects co-workers, but nonetheless I've found the same problem regarding constructive criticism or situations that require a more nuanced, pragmatic approach.

The best thing I can say about Hackman is that even though I knew it was him, I never thought "I'm watching Gene Hackman" the way I do for say, RDJ or even Gary Oldman. He was always just the guy in the role, somehow.

Even Oldman? Wow. So Sid and Nancy to The Professional. True Romance to Dracula. JFK even? He's all the same guy to you? I would agree the latter half of his career has become, same, same, but early on he was a chameleon.

I’ve found him quite different in Slow Horses as well. Great show. Incredible actor.

It's more an *awareness* of Oldman that likely crept up on me over time. For some reason Hackman had some kind of a ... null field around him for me. Felt more subtle than Oldman. Maybe it was just that 'typical mine worker's face'.

You make a sound point regarding the stages of Oldman's career, though.

Yeah right....

I was saying way before I knew about the pills...."how long till we find drugs were involved".

Kinda wondering that about the young actress that just died.....

I read today that he hit his head and was found where he fell. None of the rest makes sense if that is true.

Shame he retired so long ago. There are so many more great performances we could have gotten from him the last 20 years.

He was diagnosed with a significant heart issue, that was the reason for the "a bit before his time" retirement (though Jack Nicholson did much the same thing age/retirement-wise.) He always played pretty intense/dark characters too, so more taxing on him perhaps.

He also only really started breaking through as an actor in his later 30s so I guess was always a bit older than he seemed. He retired in his mid 70s, so not "that" early.

Had no idea he turned down lead roles in Raiders, Jaws and CE3K - had never heard that before. I guess he REALLY didn't want to work with Spielberg. Hackman as Indy, Brody (Hooper?) or Roy Neary would have been so interesting.

I had no idea either....

Hackman as Indy... just don't see it.

Hackman would make a great Quint... maybe not Brody. He also would have been a good Mayor Vaughn.
