Sad news. He and Siskel were the first well-known reviewers for me growing up. It seemed like he had gained the upper hand on this thing. I hate it when they withold negative health information until the day before they die.
Well, it is up to the family, but mere days before (on the 2nd) he blogged about the future. He said his cancer was back, but then talked about all the stuff he planned to keep doing. I don't think they really expected this to happen. They were getting ready to take him home from hospice when he passed.
Anyway, the article linked above says it all, I think. Ebert was more than just a good critic. he was a thoughtful and wise person.
