43 dead, 37 players among the 43 that perished and a dozen of those were ex-NHLers or guys who most likely might have made the NHL. Hockey or not, it's sad, it's just how much hockey has been hit by the Summer of 2011.

What almost made me cry is this story...

Stan Galiev tweets that the mother of Sergei Ostapchuk (Lokomotiv player) has died of a heart attack upon hearing the news.

Seriously after a death due to drug overdose and two suicides, and now this, this now has become the darkest and coldest Summer for hockey. Really, this has been an awful off season. Words can not express how awful this is.

Re: I know we have an NHL thread for this, but it deserves its own thread.

Taken from an exert from a TSN article: In recent years, Russia and the other former Soviet republics have had some of the world's worst air traffic safety records. Experts blame the poor safety record on the age of the aircraft, weak government controls, poor pilot training and a cost-cutting mentality.

Wow, shocked that not many people care to share their thoughts concerning this story. If it was a baseball, basketball, or football team it would be pages long.

This is a very tragic event.

i shared my concerns in the NHL thread. it's a sad situation and definately a major tragedy for the NHL and hockey in general.

Eli the thread title is wrong. That's why no ones responding.

Re: I know we have an NHL thread for this, but it deserves its own thread.

What a ____ title for a serious thread. Kind of ignorant to think its a NHL or sports story as opposed to a human story.

Re: I know we have an NHL thread for this, but it deserves its own thread.

MODS CHANGE THE TITLE...

Yes, it was a bad title thread, but in my defence, it was posted by me.

:lecture :exactly:

This was because of the crappy ass Russian planes, They are all garbage. One of the Canadian players that died his wife was on the news and she said she flew on a russian plane in Russia or to Russia, don't remember, but she said when they landed everyone started clapping, they were clapping because they were happy they didn't die on those commie 1980s planes. They don't get much maintenance.

This was the biggest loss in NHL history. Very sad.

I changed the title to the title used on Fox News. I kept the hockey connection to differentiate this crash from other crashes.

Such a sad story what made me mad was that the khl anouncing a new team to be placed the same day they annouce the whole team has died how rude! R.I.P whole team! Pavol Demitra you were a great person on the canucks team rest in paradise!

Yea, thats really ____ed up...i sense they are trying to make some profit from this whole thing as well.

Yes, it's definitely too soon.

But from a business perspective they need to go on. Sad to say but today's world you have to move on and fast if you don't want to fall behind the 8-ball. Cold? Well, perhaps, but there is a lot of money at stake here. It's sad how fast it is, but they can't cancel an entire season because of this accident. Things happen. It's unfortunate, but it's life. The world doesn't just stop because you die. This is a prime example of that.

Amen. Talk about being a disgrace...the KHL is a certifiable joke. They might as well have dropped the puck on a casket and broke out a game while they were at it.

Exactly what money is "at stake here" by the KHL having announced a new team the SAME DAY an entire team perished in worst tragedy in the sports history? How does the KHL lose money by waiting a few days or a week to make this announcement?
