I'm not trolling, but perhaps I was a little too blunt. I apologize. I just believe there is too much expectation for a character that has been relegated into the background and who has already "peaked". This is largely the fault of the writers, who have dramatically underutilized Gohan and he's roughly the same character in DBS as he was in DBGT and the character his mother"wants" him to be. It's almost as if Chi-chi is the writer's voice for where they want to position Gohan.
In the context of "filling Goku's shoes" and taking the hero mantle that it's often believed Toriyama was directing the character towards prior to Goku's return, he's fallen woefully behind. I believe that some DBZ fans keep hoping that Gohan will suddenly emerge with tremendous power much like his father and like he briefly did during the Buu saga but I personally think it won't happen not only based upon the character's history, but also based upon the real-life writing and marketing push that Goku will "always" be the hero of Dragon Ball and everyone will be second fiddle...and I'm speaking as someone who desperately wants Vegeta to get a "win". Yes, Gohan fights more to protect his family and it's admirable, but in comparison to the main "fighter" characters, he's still quite powerful, but behind and I even feel his character development is behind as well. Obviously he's much more of a family man than his father though.
Killing Gohan off and following the character in the underworld as he struggles to get back to his family, and returning to life, would be a new development for his character. He's one of the few main characters who has NOT been dead and it can go a long way toward deriving his reasons for fighting and even depicting how much his father cares for him after he sought to first protect him and then encourage his true potential.
I feel like other characters are the writer's voice for Gohan. It has been all about reaching his "hidden" power and unlocking it, but every time he achieves something, he's pulled back in favor of other characters. I've just given up on emotionally investing in the character.
It's alright. I was more shocked that it was coming from you so I was confused as to what type of tone to read it in.
There is too much expectation, I agree. I don't think Chi-Chi is at fault for this though. Gohan never wanted to be a fighter, like Goku, out of passion. He was always pulled into these situations and he fought to protect his loved ones.
Gohan's characterization and importance in Dragon Ball was reaching his hidden power but only until the Cell Saga. The context of Gohan filling Goku's shoes was a mistake by Toriyama which he corrected in Buu Saga. While it may be disappointing to some fans, it shouldn't necessarily be expected for Gohan to pursue that mantle anymore. I'm not so sure that Gohan's character development is behind either. He's a scholar, has a family, and has continued training to protect that family. That is essentially his character's core.
Everybody will be 2nd fiddle to Goku. While it may not be the most popular decision in certain fan groups, Goku will always be the main character of the story and that is how the stories will be written.
While it does sound interesting, the problem with killing Gohan off is that death in Dragon Ball isn't taken seriously. There will be no struggle for Gohan to get back to his family because all it takes is a wish from the Dragon Balls. Gohan was killed off during the Buu Saga when Kid Buu destroyed the Earth though.
