I heard they are still testing the waters with the Figuarts line. Hear they were considering giving bandai the rights in USA/UK

dont know where you got that idea from, but it wouldnt be up to disney, Hasbro has the rights for N/A, only they could sub license and allow Bandai into north america.

Hasbro would likely drop the Black Series if they fully had Figuarts to compete with. I mean, if you went into a UK bricks and mortar retailer and saw a Black Series for £22 (SRP round my way.) and a Figuarts for say £35, based on what you saw, you'd pay the extra for the Figuarts every time. Hasbro/Kenner/Palitoy have been the SW kings in the UK for decades and it's a crown they're reluctant to let slip.

You are correct, they currently have nothing to worry about but depending on the success of a line disney can decide to switch the rights to another company. Obviously once the contract is up. But at the end of the day it is up to Disney, considering they own it. Or am I confused?

Oh yeah honestly the biggest deterrent would be the over seas shipping charge. Then the tax on top of that.

Mmm, that could jack up the UK prices that's for sure, maybe even more so post Brexit. I'm just glad to be able to get Figuarts at all. My Maul is imminent too, yay!

You would think that Disney would be aware of Figuarts, if I were them I'd choose to get behind Bandai over Hasbro any day.
They are aware they gave them the rights s
for star wars in Japan. But that's the issue they were only given the rights in Japan. From a business point of view it made more sense to go with hasbro at the time because the make a wide variety of toys and already had a long standing relationship.

I guess we're looking at them from an adult point of view, I suppose, really, the kid appeal of Hasbro will always win out globally.

I hate to say it, but if I were Disney, Hasbro would take precedent everytime. Disney is a business and logically they follow the money. I'm certain Black Series figures make more margin than Figuarts. The cheap cost to make the figs along with the sheer amount they sell I'm sure is staggering.

The bread and butter demographic worldwide for this market is kids and if you want to make money you have to cater to them first and foremost.

I worked for Lego for a few years and saw this first hand. The adult collectors market is strong but when compared to the kids, it's miniscule. Lego caters to adults specifically with some offerings but only accounts for about 15% of it's assortment.

Japan is probably the only country where it is a societal norm having adults collect action figures. It is a huge part of their cultural identity. That's why there is an overwhelming amount of companies that make toys specifically for adults and can stay alive. Whereas North America barely has enough to count on one hand.

We who collect SHF are a very small market in the grand scheme of things. As a line of toys, Disney will almost always position it behind mass market product.

Yeah, on that you are right. We do tend to forget just what a minority we really are in the grand scheme of things. For me Figuarts represent the SW figures I always wanted but never had. I wanted mine to move like they did in the movies and the Kenner ones of the time never did.

I got Darth Maul earlier and I'm really impressed with him. He is as good as the reviews said he was and even just standing there as you take him out of the box he has so much attitude. There was a heart-stopping moment when his arm came off, but, thankfully, it just popped back on and was good to go again, phew! The up and down on both arms isn't quite tight, but, they hold when you need them to. The weather is rubbish so no pics yet and I'll have a bit more of a pose around with him later.

You are all forgetting one important fact; Star Wars as a brand is mostly sold to kids, and while Hasbro caters to kids and adults, Tamashii and Bandai are more premium. What self respecting mother is going to buy a kid an age 15+ figure for £40+? It was hard enougj getting my mother to buy a £10 figure a month when I was young lol.

At the end of the day, Hasbro makes Disney more money, Tamashii cant come close to it.

Edit: Just realized Drew said the same thing [emoji14]

Yeah exactly, they have a ton of different product lines especially with having both the star wars and Marvel license. Hopefully though we will see Hasbro and Bandai once the contract is up. It would really be some healthy competition. Or maybe they will drop the 6 inch scale entirely. It's interesting how it seems disney has divided the rights by the sizes. Seems Artfx has the rights for 1/10 statues. Bandai is able to sell their 1/10 movie Realization. Hot Toys/ Sideshow has 1/6. Then Revell has tge models in the US. If Mafex and Bandai can share the rights in Japan. I think Hasbro and Bandai should share the rights for the 6 inch scale. But at this point it's probably who ever is willing to pay the most for the rights.

The amazing Mikel shared these on FB. Mafex can show us some love while we're waiting for more Figuarts!

Heads up! Nippon Yasan is having an anniversary sale. Sh figuarts Padawan Obi-Wan is being sold for a discounted price.

Those Mafex droids don't look too bad, but, it depends how well articulated Threepio is as to whether it will be worth it. If Figuarts miniaturise the 1/6 Tamashii Threepio then that would be worth waiting for.

I'll probably get my Obi Wan from Kombini next week, he's still at a decent price with them. The weather has improved a little so maybe I'll get some Maul pics done later. It was a shame he got dispatched in TPM, it would have been cool to have seen him later on. A duel between him and Mace would have been epic!
