Hey guys, I've had this piece forever and always wanted it to be lit up, so I finally took things into my own hands! :naughty

I routed out the back, installed some colored cellophane to give it a proper "lava/magma" look (the polystone by itself cast a weird pink light), and added some soft foam lining to snuggly fit a little puck light into. Turning it on is accomplished by dimply pushing down on the piece, and then again to turn it off. Can still be desk or wall maounted , and the puck only raises the unit 2/8 of an inch (needed to allow pushing on/off). And ta-da! You're right there in Mt Doom! :)

Here are some pics, and of a little video demonstration:

Very nice...makes me want to do that to my Sauron base lol

Thanks for all the compliments guys! Its always nice to share something with people who understand what you're trying to do. :hi5:
*unlike the blank stares from co-workers who've seen it and are like :cuckoo: , while I'm trying to explain it.* :slap

El Skutto, the light actually does bleed through to the bottom a little. It doesnt show up well in the photos. I tried to take a dark room picture, but my cheapy camera totally freaks out. A second puck could work with proper masking on the inside (as the rock/lave is alot thinner towards the back). One of those long strip LEDs would actually be perfect, but I havent found one thats Push-activated, and didnt want to have a switch or power cord on mine. The options are limitless!

Bill29, I say go for it! Just make sure you have a little workshop area, or garage, or shop-vac, as sanding through a roughly 4in by 1in area of polystone causes a LOT OF DUST.

Adolfo, the Sauron statue is too heavy and would constantly push down on the puck leaving it always on, not that that would be a bad thing... :monkey3

I changed my mind...I dont like it....It looks too damn good!....LOL...I'm jealous..

Why not just install LED's and wire them to a power supply? You eliminate the puck, and it'll sit like it always did, and will be powered via the wall outlet. It's not as hard as it sounds. :)

If you didn't want the cord, you could always use a battery hookup. Most of this stuff can be bought at radio shack. I'd be happy to mail you some LED's so you don't have to wait for those from China. I have a ton of cool white ones that would work well. I've also got some amber one's that would be orangeish yellow light. You could mix them if you use 2 circuits, get some dynamic tones to your piece. However, the push down to turn on and off would not work. You'd have to flip a little switch on the bottom. That would be the trade-off.

If you wanted some help with that, just PM me.

And I am jealous of your whole setup! :lol

Thats because I really wanted it to be a "transparent" mod that could still be wall mountable (if necessary in the future), battery operated, and "switchless". Its for an endtable in my theater room. Think of it as a Mordor themed night-light. ;) Although I will take you up on your LED help for another project I'm working on... :D My skills stop at circuits! :dunno

Sure thing. It's not as hard as it sounds really. I started by watching this guy's tutorials. He did a 7 video series on the crux of led lighting models, here:

We can talk more about this later. Feel free to PM me with your project idea and I'll take a look.
