I was thinking about a thin metal rod being heated and then pressing against the front of the boot until it splits the correct spacing!

All the different ideas on how to make gorilla boots is neat! It's great to see the ya'll thinking about it. I think I would try usig a heat gun and split the toes by pulling a twine string across the toes for the desired effect. Not sure if it would work... or how well it would work.

I have actually thought about this before, but never mentioned it here. I think that even the metal part of a curling iron would still melt/burn the rubber of the boot. I thought the same of the heat gun. I wonder if there is some type of synthetic piece that can be heated enough to form the split and not melt the boot.

The heating point needed for the string to melt the boot would have to supercede the melting point of the boot being indented!

Does that sound correct?

Another idea! How about blow drying the boot itself till the rubber gets to a softer point and then using a utensil to form the split!

I used a hot metal needle with a tapered end to form a split carefully not going too far into the boot as to not make a hole. Good enough for me!

I have a couple pairs of Custom Utensils I believe to be used as nut extracters. They look like something a dentist might use, but I have used these many times for customising in the past. Here are some pictures. The spear end reminds me of the spear that was used to kill neville in The Omega Man.

I am not satisfied when looking at the boots! It requires a more rounded (rump) on each side of the crack! Sounds weird, but that is what it looks like to me. Here are two more pictures of what I have decided to use to accomplish this. I will post more pictures after I am finished.

I bought mine from a popular crafts store. I think it was Michaels or AC Moore. You may also want to try a fabric or Hobby craft store at your local Mall.

Yes. That's what I was trying to convey. Except I suggested string. Your utensil should also be good to pull back the rubber and make the toe split.

Hi Angel! I will probably try hobby lobby, Thanks! Hey, the blow drier technique did not work for me, so I heated the utensil and applied a number of times. If only I could make an upper heart shape with indentation part in the front with rounded sides and proper heat, I could do the split in one whack! I found that you have to apply the utensil immediately after heating. I used a large bic barbecue lighter.

2 newbie questions.

First, I dont want to damage anything, so here goes.

How do I get the ursus helmet off. Its locked on there pretty damn good. Second, I tried taking the head off. It looks like the head is attched to a ball joint from the neck. It looks like I have to strecth the plastic and pull it off, but it would never go back on that way again.

No, knowing that everyone takes their heads off, I must be missing something.. Very frustrated..

Hey Sixx! I was unable to remove the Ursus helmet, so I sent it to Angel and he took it off for me with brute gorilla force.

If you warm up the head with a blow dryer really well you can still pop that stretchy plastic back onto the ball joint or remove without tearing. I tore my Zira by accident, but no biggie because you can always just stuff the headsculpt with rubber casting material and place the neck ball joint back before it cures and let it sit there until the material sets. Then it's still removeable.

Hmmm...the helmet comes off extremely easy on mine, and is just as easy to put back on.
I have no idea why it wont come off on yours.

This is the inside of the sideshow ape heads. Basically you want to heat up the head really well so that it softens the inside vinyl that surrounds that ball joint.

Yeah, heating up the joints is always a good idea before trying to remove the head and limbs etc.
I use boiling water in a jug with just a drop of cold water.
put the figure upside down in it for 2 minutes then remove, dry it off, wait a few seconds for it to cool a bit then attempt to pop it off.

I was in a foul mood that I couldn't shake today. I painted my nails black and somehow I feel a little bit better. Wondering when I am going to go in full ape gear again. I wish it were soon. I need to get my ape on.

Sixx I was thinking maybe your General Ursus has a lot of glue under that helmet. Do you have any glue removers that could help to dissolve the bond?
